Title: VComms
Post by: Squonk on October 24, 2006, 09:18:55 AM
Ive been playing Source on and off for the past couple of weeks and the game plays nice...But the voice comms are crap.
Is there a diffrent codec we could try?
The SOG boys are using TS :eyebrow: and not in game comms so team play ishard when they on but the comms are that bad i can see why they do.

JAS sounded like he had a pair of benny's tights in his mouth last night on comms:D

Thoughts?

Team Speak could be an option for MeatHook but we really want to encourage TCS on the public server and to do that we need to talk so that everyone on your team can hear and not just those using teamspeak.  I know BB has done some serious digging to try and find a way to improve the in game comms but with limited success.

In CZ the voicecodec could be aranged serverwise through settings I believe. Not sure how it works in Source.
Some people I can hear really good but others I really have to listen to what they say...(Especially Whitey if he talks to fast  ).

I'm doing more digging. According to the Steam website speex should work on the server so I'm doing some testing. There seems to be a lot of tweaks at the client end too - I'll post a thread once finished checking things out.

Thanks BB.

Re the SOG folks, I have to say it's a damn struggle because whislt we encourage them to use ingame VC when they do nobody can understand what is being said because of the apalling sound quality :(  GL with the Speex thing BB and any tweaks that can be done to help would be sooooo welcome.

Some people I can understand pretty well but others not. Maybe having a look in the personal settings of the people we can understand?

Do anyone know if it is possible to incorporate the CZ voice codec instead?

OK

I have spent 8 hours in the last 3 days trying to get this speex codec to work properly. However, I cannot. I have tried 3 different speex codecs (2003, 2005 and 2006 versions) on both client and server. I even tried the old CS voice_miles codec but got the same effects: when you change map you need to press ESC, options, OK, ESC to get voice comms back. :(

In every case the client reports that it could not load the voice_speex codec (the server reports nothing). I got to the stage where I copied the dll to every single directory in my steam folder but it still will not work:ranting2:. Strangely enough, quitting and rejoining the server doesn't enable comms, you still need to do the workround which makes me believe that there is some communication between client and server that is maintaining an incorrect setting.

I have had enough and need to get back to some RL stuff. if anyone else wants a crack at it feel free.

I've tryed loads of stuff in my personalsettings with absolutely NO luck.
Then joined TeamSpeak all went fine still.
Then went ingame and the bloody TS thing didn't work anymore! :ranting2:

When I have voice_loopback and such I hear a very weird echo...

Do you have the same key bound to activate TS as comms in CSS?

What we would need is three TS channels. And when you join a team or spectator you will be auto assigned to that specific channel. Any programmers around that can sort that?

Nope! I thought the exact same thing so I made sure it wasn't "double crossed".

When I do speak I have the echo part which is really anoying.
What might be my problem:
-My headset (the micpart has a small cut in it)
-My Shuttle soundcard.

When I'm not to anoyed I'll have a look in to it.

BTW, when playing on Source earlier on I could understand Sheepy pretty well and DarkAngel was slightly better to hear.
If you guys want me to ask the 12K-people how they have their settings, let me know.

It's not so much the settings as the files and their proper location.
I think I have tried all the different files in all the different locations but please prove me wrong (please?)

Of course they may not be using speex at all in which case we need to check other things. As i said after friday, the voicecomms were really good initially but as more people joined it degraded!
