Title: Server reboots
Post by: Doorman on November 16, 2006, 10:36:58 PM
Given my limited knowledge of servers and how they work, it occured to me that servers, indeed, computers in general, need rebooting every so often. Now Blackadder was offline for quite a while today and LFS suddenly  dumped us unceremoniously  so I checked with BlueBall who kindly arranged for a reboot.(muchos gracias)
My question is this: Can the servers be scheduled to reboot, say in the early hours of the morning rather that wait for a problem? If I'm talking crap, keep it to yourself.

No your not talking crap but a server really should be capable of running permanently. My own server has not been offline in over a year!

I think what migyht have happened is that Microsoft released some updates which the server automatically downloaded and then restarted. personally I'm not a great fan of this but thats the way the servers are setup so we don't forget to upgrade them against the latest nasties (as if we would )

What do the servers run then? XP? I kinda assumed that the CS and BF2 servers would be running Linux, although I dunno if there is a Linux LFS server out there so I dunno if that one could.

Server 2003.

The server code for Linux CS is a pile of poo unfortunately. Not sure about BF2.

Just going on what was said when it used to be linux. As Valve are 'Minions of Gates' it kinda makes sense that they'd mung up the linux server code so people wouldn't use it :(

Still, these forums are on linux and I'm certainly not going to be changing that!
