Title: Server/Network Problems Update
Post by: TeaLeaf on April 21, 2003, 07:47:48 AM
Stryker, I get the impression from G-man that some hardware broke and you have been beavering away trying to fix it.  If you get a moment, could you please give us an update on what happened, what the resolution is and the timescales please?  I am of course just being nosey, but also we have to figure out how we can host the clan matches we have booked for the next 3 nights.

The current problems are:
(a) wildly erratic ping on homer, and
(B) Baldric kicks you off the server shortly after you have joined.

Your feedback (other than 'stfu noob') would be appreciated

baldric seems ok now. was on until late last night with five others and it looked good. we swapped to mh when there was enough space and all was good there too.

then my machine locked up and I called it a night, but there were loads of others on. I'm sure they'll add if it's still broken.

oh, and it was smitey that told me that there was a prob with a router.

I did a server restart and it seemed to fix the kicking out problem

Some things you just couldn't make up...

We've had a failing router for some time now - it's been on the "replace this POS" list for a while due to its habit of falling over without warning.

So yesterday, it decides to take a dive into the great unknown once again and leave us with one working router sending CW's entire traffic through one upstream provider (2 routers=feeds to 2 upstream bandwidth providers, see?).  This is the situation that has caused lagginess in the past - with me so far?  Good.

While we're sat there with only one (2Mb)link to the outside world, a customer of one of CW's customers gets his box hacked and rooted (we find out later) and then proceeds to pump out something like 19Mb/s into this 2Mb pipe.  Imagine trying to force an entire Morris Minor up your own ass to illustrate the consequences of trying to put something too big into something too small (OK, not you then Smite..).

We noticed and cut the connection to the customer whose customer was causing the problem.  All was fine until the customer wanted to get onto his systems to investigate and stop the problem - we foolishly let him have access, the packet storm started again and WE got cut off by OUR upstream provider because their only router committed seppuku over the shame of having to throw out 8 packets in every 10.  (Remember we only had one provider 'cos the other router was down?).

Nothing else for it but to drive up to Manchester, replace our POS router with a shiny new one, reboot the upstream providers dead router to get it coughing back into life and meet up with the customer whose customer's box had been HaX0r3d and get him to throw it on the server room floor and pound it into a pile of components.

The net result is we now have a new router to replace the POS router meaning we have a lot less chance of a chain of events like the one above being responsible for taking CW down.

All clear now?

Actually, I pushed.  The slapper in question was pissed as a sheepy and had a face like a bag of spanners.

Quote of the night:  "The othe night, I had a bloke in a Lamborghini waiting for me outside a club, but I turned him down 'cos I'm not good enough..."

Substitute "wheelbarrow" for "Lamborghini" and she'd have been closer to the mark...

another classic quote:

"So what do you guys do for a living"

  "were porn barrons"

"oh I see, what do you think of this?"

"not that kind of porn darling"

Geez, I only hope it were the beer making her that numb.  Still was funny to see barry trying to claw his way through a wall in an attempt to get away
