Hello there
Is it legal to resell games?
Steam games
PC Games
Console games /Xbox 360, Wii
I know the likes of Valve don't make it easy for PC games.
Any ideas on this topic?
I think it is, cause at least here in Norway there's a lot of shops that buy games from ppl for reselling.
it is perfectly legal, as long as they are the original game cd and ofcourse with all the cd keys etc
It should be, certainly in the UK as there are plenty of shops that resell games, dvds, cds, books, etc. Example would be CEX which has many stores in the country.
The only problem you might have is where the game has an online account associated with it, like Half Life 2 (you have to have an online steam account) or World of Warcraft (you have to have a paying account). I think you're on dodgy legal ground here, because of the extra regs that the games maker attaches to the online account. But I could be wrong, and if I am I'm sure Smilodon will happily troll my statements to make me look foolish :sideways: :norty:
WOW is certainly sellable.
you can just create a new account. you get 2 free with the game anyway, one with a free month and one with 10 days free

This isn't the case try selling your account on ebay and you will be in trouble with a number of organisations. This can lead to ebay strikes and other penalties. I tried to sell my wow account and found my ebay listing being removing an a warning email being sent to me from wow's publisher as well as ebay. Officially i don't think you can even lend your games or sell them. Isn't copyright brilliant:eyebrow:. With steam you can sell your games but you will have to get the buyer to pay a small charge for transfer of your account. I think it's somewhere in the steam powered support section.
Yep WOW can be installed on as many PC's as you like. I have my copy on three computers at the moment. Blizzard make the money selling the subscriptions and each copy of the game only comes with one CD key and each key only allows one (or two) accounts to be created with it.
When you buy a game, downloaded or boxed, you don't actually own the game, only a licence to use the software. With a boxed game you can sell the game to someone else effectively transfering the licence to another person. The truth is that many EULA's strictly forbid the transfer of the game to another person. However it's very unlikely a publisher could make a case against someone who sells on their game to a 3rd party stick in court. EULA's can contain all sorts of legally unenforcable rubbish...and many do.
With Steam you have nothing to sell though, and cannot transfer the licence to someone else. Valve are under no obligation to provide a means of transfering the licence and their EULA clearly states this
QuoteYou may not sell or charge others for the right to use your Account, or otherwise transfer your Account.
QuoteYou are entitled to use the Steam Software for your own use, but you are not entitled to: (i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Steam Software to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Steam Software to others without the prior written consent of Valve
So boxed PC games are fine, online subscriptions are not and I'm not really sure why anyone would be dumb enough to use Steam to buy games, unless they were certain that they would never want to sell the game. I bought HL2 on Steam only so I could have access to CS source. And I will always want CS:S. But I bought CZ in a box so I could sell that fetid turd of a game to some idiot....Dingo I think?

Not true. The account is linked to the CD key, of which there are 2 in the game box - the 1 month one and the 14 day one. The one month one can have extra time put onto it - the 14 day one can't. When I wanted to continue using the character i'd levelled using a 14 day trial a mate of mine gave me I had to enter the one month free key from a new copy of the game that I had purchased before I could add more time to my account. That CD key was then linked to my account, a link which cannot be broken. Hence there is no point in me selling the disks on, as someone else would have to buy their own copy to get a CD key they could use.
The same goes for Steam. Any games used via Steam are linked to your online account, so if you sell the games on and someone else tries to validate them to *their* Steam account they'll get an error. Likewise if you sell a copy of BF2 or whatever on and have already created an online account of your own linked to the CD key in the box.
