Specc fire, then get loads of +INT gear as your 1st pri.

Or specc frost, wich is more mana efficient, but i dont know if that matters until you actually hit end-game raiding.

i am currently leveling a mage.

im up to lvl 49 at the moment. its level 50 before you get a water elemental!

my suggestion is just to put all you points in the frost tree if you want a "survivability" build. i do a lot of damage in frost spec as i have a lot of +frost damage gear. I think i have something like +150 or +160 damage, which isnt bad. it is pretty much a waste of time to put points in the -resistance bit at your level, you should kill stuff b4 it reaches you.

start at max range

3x frost bolt
frost nova
blink
frost bolts

that will kill most things near your lvl

Puroblast, fireball, fireblast, blink, fireball/fireblast.. bam bam dead... muahahaha... I love firespec really.. But it eats up a lot of mana.. plus frost spec gives you some shields'n'****..

Currently I'm level 42 with my mage. I used to be frost up till the last patch, but I respecced fire recently; it really owns bigtime. Instead of +int I went for maximal +fire damage (+166 currently :norty: ), I'm killing everything before even taking damage (3 fireball hits = dead mob). Without rested I'm getting slightly over 30k XP per hour while farming the hinterland trolls (lvl 41-42). With frost I was getting about 20-22k XP an hour.

The down side is that you don't get much +sta, so if you get in trouble with adds you'd better run because you will probably die otherwise. The same goes for PvP, you'll get one shot. My mana is still 'decent' (+/-3100), not really high but it's just a buffer anyway; you can make your own drinks. +Int isn't really interesting damage wise at this level either imo, it's not giving enough +crit% per point to be worth it. And because of the +fire damage you'll get a lot more dmg/mana, so you'll be more efficient as well (less drinking = less down time).

Keep in mind that this is just my limited personal experience and it might not be the best way to do it. Anyway I'm getting pretty good results.

I suck at grinding really.. a lot
But my mage is a lvl 49.. I was suppose to get it to 60 before TBC, but got a slight problem that kept me offline for a good 3 months, so couldn't..

But fire.. I love it.. if I could Id take full in all 3 of course, but im mainly sticking to fire and a bit arcane (arcane concentration ftw)

I reckon Sandrion is right though :thumbsup2:

Best DPM and survivability used to be Frost, which is what I levelled my Mage as.  Best DPS has always been Fire.

However with the new TBC-style talent builds and the changes in the mechanics theorycrafting says the best DPM is actually now the Fireball.  Fire hits for approx 50% more damage straight off the bat, but without the survivability escape exit that frost provides.

Currently my base frostbolt hits for about 1,050, but my base Fireball hits for about 1,700, plus DOT plus Ignite.  Many mobs which need 3 frost bolts to die will die with 2 fireballs or one fireball crit plus DOT & ignite ticks.  With a crit up to 3.4k and the 680 ignite (x2), then it kills a lot of mobs outright for one fireball!  Frost could never do that.

Given the better Fire DPM  we now have in-game for fire then I would be choosing Fire if I were levelling a mage right now.  However, I would go frost in Molten Core whilst gathering my T1 gear - the survivability really helps and a lot of stuff in MC is immune to fire. When you are deep into BWL then imo that's when your mages should spec back to Fire for the extra DPS.  It is seriously helpful by the time you get to Nefarian to be able to pump out that higher Fire DPS to munch your way through his adds to reach Phase2.

@Sheepy:  can I recommend the insertion of a spell in your cycle?

3x frost bolt
frost nova
Cone of Cold <<<<<<<
blink
frost bolts

With a frost spec (and I assume the appropriate talent points spent), against a frozen target (ie after frost nova) the crit rate on CoC is insane and it is verging on criminal to not use it on a frozen target!

HTH.

So now Fire is best in both DPS and DPM? And that leaves Frost with survivability and not much else? Unless you do Molten Core, whats the point in having frost? :eyebrow:

With the TBC talents and changes, very little point.  There is a huge thread on this on the EJ forums if you want the theorycrafting behind it, but deep fire builds now look very attractive - but there are other options.  The EJ thread (which I followed) put in some very good numbers and DPM of fireball much improved.

ummmmm.

I may well look at changing to fire for a bit of fun soon, I think I will start to collect some other gear,

that is if GD allows me to. Last 3 bits of good loot that have dropped in partys he has rolled better than me. (im still using gear as low as lvl 23! just for +frost dmg)

Personally, at your level I would stick to fire.  As I said above, if I were levelling another mage that's what I would do.

at the moment im putting together some gear to swap over to fire. all my gear is +frost. Last night i picked up a nice offhand from sunken temple.

+20 fire damage
and
+7 damage or healing from magic!

Wierd doesnt want me to respec fire as i already pull to much agro from him as frost!
