It seems that you can install the Vista upgrade without having an OS installed before hand. This could be handy when/if people decide they want to move from XP to Vista. Link here (http://www.instantvista.com/windows-vista-upgrade.html).
Pinned for now.........

When i ran the vista setup from a clean install i encountered a screen that asked me for system drivers. I didn't exactly know what this meant and simply gave up. Can anyone elaborate on this point of the install?

Its the same idea as pressing F6 during an XP install - it gives you a chance to load drivers for chipsets are not recognized natively by Vista.
I see what you mean BB but why could i not progress any further with the install. Did vista not have a driver present on its cd?

Not sure, I just carried on installing from that point.
My guess is that you have some sort of unsupported HW-Controller or something... But i think you should be able to continue..
yup, you're most likely running a raid card or your hard drives on an onboard raid controller / sata device.
All of the nvidia nforce mobos have 'issues'
A spec would be useful
Ok I am thinking of going the Vista club on my next upgrade which should be soon.
So I am looking at the flavours and wondering what to get. I am guessing the x64 version but what.
So what are you lot using? Home, Home Prem, Ultimate??
Any help would be great.
best to get vista business or vista ultimate. The OEM can be a cheap option to buy. I'd stay away from the 64 bit version if i were you and grab the 32 bit version as its more stable.
Besides i'm staying with xp till windows 7 which is fingers crossed out in 2009.
why keep away from x64??

where did you get this info from? I've been running the 64 bit version at home and work now for quite some time and it's rock solid. No problems at all.
The only issue you may find is driver support for older hardware, but anything purchased in the last few years should be fine. You can search for your hardware here; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/

Geez Ghosty you really crack me up. Where do you get this from?
Gandalf what version though Ultimate?
I'm using 64bit Home Premium OEM , no probs except the non existance of drivers for my canon scanner.

I use ultimate, however if you're not interested in the media centre sections and don't need to join a domain (a business network) then go for the top home version (home premium)
It's best that you make the decision based on your useage. You can compare editions easily here; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx

I'm the same but replace scanner with old webcam.
I've found it to be totally reliable and it makes full use of my 4GB of memory, unlike the 32bit edition.

I can sort that :)
Go here (http://www.hamrick.com/)
I use the pro version with my epson scanner because Epson couldn't be arsed making vista drivers.
Unfortunately to get vue scan to work you need to install the canoscan software, which won't install with Vista 64 . It does with some versions but not the Lide 50.

do you have the .exe that for the cannon program? if so can you zip it and send it to my email (msn on my deadmen profile).... as i have found a lot of the time its down to the setup.exe for programs that do not work not the actual program which can be easily fixed...
if you dont have this a link to the latest drivers would be great ...
i hate doing it but then i hate spending good money aswell :eyebrow:
BTW vuescan is pretty awsome aswell i use it as i have different scanners for different purposes
and sometimes forced to use other peoples this helps a i can just use one program to rule them all, i also use
Vueprint for the same reasons..
Email sent. Much appreciated.

If you can fix 16-bit setup.exe files to work in Vista 64 I have a dearly loved CAD program that I cannot install because the setup.exe is 16 bit and won't run in Vista64.
Would you mind having a look at it at some point if/when you have time?
Decided to go with x64 as I got it in a game of chance :) Thanks for the help lads

Personal experience. I had xp x64 and 64 bit vista and couldn't find drivers for some of the products i wanted to use and ended up sending them back or ending up out of pocket as i couldn't send them back. Yes drivers were sometimes available such as from Hp but they were only beta drivers not drivers that were stable or had support if things went wrong.
Things may have changed but on regular occasions i see Wandy from PC Zone's magazine saying that to have a *rock solid* system you need to go 32 bit. With 32 bit i am able to locate files quicker without trying to search two program file locations for files x86 and x64. Besides 64 bit isn't utilised yet and we still haven't finished utilising 32 bit systems. Few programs are 64 bit enabled and the amount of reinstalls my friends have encountered from having 64 bit issues is endless.
My 2 pence

But that doesn't imply that 64bit is less stable. I agree that there are driver issues but there are for 32 bit vista as well (BBB's webcam worked in XP but Logitech won't supply drivers for any flavour of vista)
I find 64 bit perfectly stable, there are some app crashes but they seem to be app related and developers have released patches that address the issue so I'm happy with 64bit and being able to use all of my memory (Photoshop before you ask :))
Thanks for all your help I went with x64 ultimate on my new rig!!! Really looking forward to the LAN now!!!:yahoo::yahoo:
a full year after buying it i finally got round to installing vista x64 home premium last night :)
I originally Had major issues with the install hanging on a blue screen. Played about trying different fixes but in the end gave up
but since getting vista pre installed on my dell laptop, i decided it was worth another crack. and to my shock it went straight in :g:
Only thing i can put it down is a new sound card that was installed between attempts.
other than that, and new memory and cpu the system is exactly the same
But either way its working now
so no big deal :yahoo:
BB,
If you grab the xp drivers from their site slot them on your desktop and them install the xp driver in vista. This worked for me. Try a logitech vista and xp workaround google.
