I need to compress raw footage filmed by videocamera. Those files a pretty large 3gb to 5gb and would like to make to fit dvd :)
So what would be best program for this and best codec ?

lots of digital video resources and how-to's at www.doom9.org (http://www.doom9.org)
I highly recommend http://www.virtualdub.org/index Virtualdub as a free video compression (and to some extent, editing) tool.
If you want it to play back on a regular DVD-player then you want it to be MPEG2 I think, although if you assume more up to date players, HTPCs or PCs then I'd suggest either MPEG4 or DivX. I usually try use MPEG4 as it's probably more common. MPEG4 will give you a much smaller output file than MPEG2 as well.
what format is the stream from the camera? A single-sided DVD should be happy with something like 3.7Gb (or was it 4.2?)
I have captured them out of the camera with some "crappy" editing program but it can't compress files properly and now they are .avi.
And the files doesn't need to be DVD player compatible I just wanna make "back up" to DVD incase that my computer crashes(Thats why the small size).
Using the Virtualdub now and the best codec would be MPEG4 ? or should I just look them all through.. :P
Do you want to access them directly from the DVD or just have a safe backup on the DVD? If you just need the safe backup then use winzip to compress them and burn the zip file to DVD if you can get it small enough

For next time you could use Virtualdub to capture as well :) MPEG4, DIVX, H263, H264, whatever you like.
.avi means "audio video interleave" and the audio / video can be compressed (or not) with whatever codec you like...divx, mpeg, 3ivx, etc, etc

In my experience winzip is rubbish with video...usually saves a whopping 0%-3% or thereabouts:doh:

So if you only needed to save 3% it would be fine wouldn't it :)
Thanks for all the replys :)
I used Virtuadub and they are alot smaller, still need to try different codecs for best looks and size.

remember that the codecs themselves often have quality settings too. Some more than others. Lots to play about with!
