Title: Ventrilo Server
Post by: OldBloke on March 19, 2007, 10:37:51 AM
The dMw racing section use Ventrilo as their preferred voicecomms server but the 'free' version is limited to just 8 slots. We have been in the position of being full up recently and, as comms plays such an important part of the racing experience, a couple of racers have had to miss out.

Ventrilo servers are dirt cheap to rent and I would like to propose that the community purchases a yearly subscription with this mob (http://www.clanplanet.co.uk/index.php?act=ventrilo).

20 slots (£30.60 per annum) would be ample for dMr at the moment but we may wish to take up a greater allocation. This would allow us to use Ventrilo instead of TeamSpeak so removing the bandwidth and CPU usage.

Waddya fink?

I have to say that my personal preference would be to use what we currently benefit from and switch dMr to TS which was the proposal discussed last time this came up.  Bandwidth and CPU usage I do not believe are issues for us at the moment with our current package.  This removes the overhead entirely.

Is there a good reason why TS is not appropriate?

It's all to do with the push-to-talk options. Vent supports DirectInput which means that you can assign any key on your steering wheel to enable your mic. On TS you have to use a key-mapper as a middle-man - i.e. map a key on your wheel to a keyboard key then map that key to push-to-talk in TS. In reality this means that it's a more complicated setup and harder to get newcomers up and working.

The developer blog on the TS site does say that they are working on DirectInput but no dates mentioned for a release.

My only comment would be that the voice quality on TS (on the BF2 Channels anyway) does degrade when you get around 20 people on.

Well SOG's TS server suffers no such problems with 100 people on it and up to 45 in a channel.  Genesis (the WoW guild I raid with) also run a TS server and this happily houses 30 in a channel with no problems and up to 40 online at any one time.  Given that we use the TS channels for a minimum of 4 hours per night and actually rely on the comms for raid timing & effectiveness I suspect we would have noticed any deterioration as numbers in creased.  I therefore suspect the settings used to create the channel may not have been ideal?

dMw standby comms actualy are set to a higher level of the codex then the SOG TS codex (12,3 Speex for sog, 16,3 for dMw, Genesis even uses 25,9)

Anyhow, i used to have push to talk on TS on my wheel, ill see if i cant figure out how to set it up again.

Edit: OB is right, it wont take it straight up, my wheel comes with some emulation software to map it to keyboard keys...

That makes dMw TS deterioration in sound quality nowt but wierd. :tumbleweed:

In which case £30 for a year is pretty decent and allows TS a year to get their programming issues resolved. Go for it.

Shall I order one OB or will you?

I contacted them this morning to let them know that their Vent servers were playing up. I've just contacted them again (copied you in, Paul).

Good start :eyebrow:

Problem appeared to be mine not theirs - I did not allow sufficient time for the server to restart each time - it seems to take a few minutes whereas I was expecting it to reboot in under a minute.  Anyway, server now tested and working.

Yep. All now hunky dory. Support emailed me to say that they had to truncate the server name to 'Dead Men Racing'.

Thanks for your help, Paul. :yahoo:

The quality is MUCH better than the original. I've been speaking with Ben a little while ago and it was clear as a bell. One tiny gripe, can't get rid of the MOTD panel. (forgotten the admin password  )
