Title: Technical Issues
Post by: DrSteam on April 16, 2007, 12:22:08 PM
I'm having a real problem running CS atm. My pc is freezing up at the 'retrieving server info' point of entering a map. And believe me I have tried everything, including, switching off firewall, defragging cs files, checking integrity of cs files, reinstalling, turning off antivirus, deleting the blob etc files, windowed mode, system restore.
Its definatley freezing, I get the 'not responding' comment in task manager. For all my trying, CS worked once a couple of days ago, so I lasted up until map change on boomer then it happened again. I recently reinstalled my copy of XP pro, and CS worked fine for the first few day's of the fresh install.
Doing a search on the steam forums for 'retrieving server info', brings up 9 pages of problems, with no single remedy. Some of the vague fixes can be either server side or client side, so I can't even pinpoint if the problem is mine or steam's!
My only other thought is , something to do with my ISP. But Im not quite sure how to check that out fully. I seem to be getting ordinary ping results in command prompt.
Can anyone here help? Its been almost a week now since BK has kicked my ass on boomer, and I'm getting withdrawals! :boxing:

Does it happen everytime? Or can you join once in a while?

I would say out of 30 attempts to get on, it worked once.

Is it always the same maps or does it vary?

AFAIK Its various maps. I will spend up to an hour trying various things, and in that time anyone playing on boomer may see the continual pop up saying 'Twine joining game'
Of course its not just boomer, I have tried other servers to make sure!

Make sure you don't have X-Fire/MSN/AIM/Skype running and try again
.  I had an issue with really slow connections to the server and it seemed to be OK when X-Fire wasn't running.  This was resolved by the last X-Fire Update. :g:

Hmmm, which internet service provider are you with? I have the BT Home Hub set up and my most frequent problem is that at the retrieving server info bit it will freeze sometimes, and sometimes i'm allowed to just cancel, another problem is when people answer the phone, the Hub messes around and i lose the connection completely. >>>> However this has become alot more frequent recently.

What kind of backgroundprograms do you have running?

my CSS crashes/freezes every now and again. Seem to be sometimes during the getting resources bit, sometimes mid-action, no real correlation that I can pinpoint other than my pc perhaps feeling tired or something.

Try shutting off all other background programs and see if that helps. What are your cpu/gpu/system temps like when running intensive 3d games?

Exodus: Im with Tiscali, and my gut feeling is that it is something to do with my connection.

Duvel : Very few, just firewall and wacom. as I re-installed XP recently, 'my machine is clean'

suicidal monkey : All temp's fine, to put it bluntly.

Did you reinstall steam or just restore the backed up files? It might be worth saving your config files then blitzing steam and letting it reinstall your games - it takes a while but will rule out any corrupted files.

Do you have another PC you could try on that connection point?

Have you changed router settings recently?

have you upgraded a firewall recently?

Sorry lots of questions just trying to see if anything leads to a lightbulb coming on :)

No spare pc powerful enough to run cs on.
I don't use a router.
I did update my free version of zonealarm recently. But I have tried cs with zonealarm turned off.
I did try and update my directX version recently, even though I have version 9c, the microsoft site did seem to update it ... Could that be worthy of a lightbulb?

Can you try starting CS from the games menu (rather than joining a server) and then create a local server and see if you can join it?

OK at least we now know there is not a prob with your internet connection :)

If you feel comfortable try uninstalling your firewall TEMPORARILY just to check it is not the problem. Don't go online for more than 5 mins so bootup with network cable unplugged.

I dont think it's my copy of cs. Another thing that I remembered last night was that during installing halflife2, at no point was I asked to type in my unique code that came with the game, you know the one something like ..... erterg-gerggg-tjfghgf-dfgeger-sfhdfhdg

I'll try and add some more research to this, it seems a bit familiar to a problem I once had...
I'll try and find out
