Title: 5.1 Headset w/ Mic
Post by: Bastet on April 17, 2007, 01:46:46 PM
So i finaly decided to get a decent headset, allthough all the 5.1 headsets i found in local stores so far are without microphone. So now my question is do any of you know of a good headset?

Cost is not much of a issue, sound and mic quality are by far more important.

Thanks in advance :D

They reviewed surround sound headsets on the gadget show last night.

They didn't seem overly convinced at the ability of the surround sound of most of the sets reviewed, the bonus seems to come from the improved sound quality.

I've non-USB medusas running from an SB Audigy 4 (non-pro), no problems from what I've heard.

Personally the last 2 headsets I have owned have been Medusas and I have had no problems with them so long as you take the time to read the instructions and wire the right thing to the right thing.  My current set is the one with the separate amp (this one (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-027-SL&groupid=702&catid=22&subcat=692)).

Having read the article linked by Armitage I would strongly disagree with some of the comments made - I'm not sure I have ever heard of the Medusa being described as 'tinny' at all.  From a directional point of view I have not found front to be confused with back either.  But then maybe I wired mine up correctly. :norty:  Medusa seems to be a very good quality set of cans and I'd recommend them.

I have this headset and a Sound Blaster X-fi. Works great. I used to have Plantronics Audio90 but Medusa just blows it out of the water.

Still got my Medusas (audigy s/card),cracking on for 4 years old now and not a glitch.:D

N.B.As I use to sell these I did note that they seem to have cheapened the feel of them, maybe thinner materials etc,the new one definatly feel more flimsy.

I got mine from Norm and have no complaints about them.  Used them on various SoundBlaster cards and nVidia on-board.

Thas ok, since you also looking for one :D

I am looking for a local retailer now, but the model TL linked seams to be hard to come by, lots of retailers only have the one w/o the amp.

Now you've got me thinking about gettting one as well.

So, what Medusa ones do you recommend?

USB or 3.5mm, Scan (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=39&Category=Speakers&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterKeywords=&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterCategories=&FilterManufacturers=485&OrderBy=1) seem to have good prices even after delivery and USB sounds okay for keeping the standard 3.5mm speakers plugged in.

Or do I really need 5.1, whats the current feeling on standard stereo ones and which are best? Currently using Audio90's

Well, the USB version has a built in soundcard so to say. It will circumvent any card you have installed. The 3.5 mm one (the one I have) has an amplifier box and works with any sound card. I prefer the 3.5 mm myself.

Damn you TL! Convincing me to spend money ;)

QuoteYour Order has been packed and is in the process of being shipped.

£50.95 x 1 - SpeedLink Medusa SL-8796 5.1 Home Edition + 5.1 Amplifier

Hopefully with the external amp I can plug that into my X-Fi and then plug my 7.1 setup and the headphones into the Medusa amp. If not I guess I could drop the 7.1 back down to 5.1.

I got the USB medusas, and they're Grrrrreat!:D

I particularly like the way the earpieces swivel so they lie flat on the desk when not in use.

The in-line volume control on mine looks and feels cheap and nasty though, and because it doesn't have a clip to attatch to the clothes, it just flops about which is annoying as the 4 volume controls can change settings.
Pen had a different, classier control on his set.

I got the Speedlink SL-8793 Medusa 5.1 ProGamer Edition Headset (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106186) just before the LAN and can report that they are excellent.  Comfortable and light with excellent sound quality and a mic that stays where you put it.  As others remarked, the in-cable controls/amp do seem a little flimsy but not especially fragile unless you're  the type of klutz that regularly runs over their headset cable with their chair castors.  In which case. I'd go for something in case-hardened steel and carbon fibre.

I'm gutted that TL didn't have a pair of these (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119660) at the LAN.  Mind you, I may have talked Ron into blowing some of his pension fund on some...

They are indeed quite nice. The actual positional sound is not quite as good as I was hoping, and I don't seem to be able to get the bass level to anything like as good as my old 'phones, but they're pretty good headphones overall.

Have been in London over the weekend, hence the lack of testing and review writing ;)

I was kinda hoping (though not *expecting*) that as my 7.1 speakers only take the same number of cables from the back of the soundcard as a 5.1 system I would be able to pass all 7 speakers through the Medusa amp and have them still work, but alas my middle 2 speakers no longer produce sound. Aah well. it's still preferable to digging around the back of my desk every time I want to use the headphones ;)

I agree with other comments about the in-line controls seeming a bit cheap and plasticky, but the rest of the headphones seem good and solid. On the whole, I would probably send them back if I could (as there is nothing physically wrong with the unit I think Overclockers might complain ;) ), but only because I already have a good speaker set and only use headphones on those occasions when the missus is needing quiet to get work done or whatever.

These are quite sexy.. I found a review and it also mentioned that the bass is poor. This isn't entirely suprising as there's not much room left for a sizable woofer of any description.. As the individual speakers are undoubtedly small, it's also no suprize that they're a bit "tinny"...

I'll stick to my medusa's..

Your microphone volume is set too high.

It can also be that you selected the mic channel to be what is heard (wat men hoort) which loops it.
