Post by: Silly on May 16, 2003, 09:35:05 AM
Hi guys, just popped to in to wave and say hi and thanks for a top weekend.

I've written an article about it for the Battle-fields webbie (http://www.battle-fields.com) entitled "My First Lan (http://www.battle-fields.com/article.php?artid=65)".

Nice article Silly, good to meet you and debate over the trials and tribulations of life, work and counter strike awm useage.

You're server ip has now been installed on HLSW and shall be visited this weekend I would imagine.

Some strong comments in your article but in retrospect some things to work on and I agree with much of the stuff about the cs configs etc. I think for the next LAN we need to organise the CS servers or other gaming servers to reflect our stringent map/ rule selection criteria on MH (minus PCS or mixed rules) since we don't play crap maps normally, we allowed a few to slip in and FF to be off a lot at our LAN.

Yep. All points taken onboard Silly. The next LAN will be better structured.

That's a promise.

I know the 1am curfew didn't go down well but I think everyone should remember that the room contained thousands of pounds worth of kit and the responsibility for making sure that the room was secure was not one to be taken lightly. 'Last one out lock the door' was not an option.

In any case ... if you lot wanted to play longer why did you all bugger off at 2pm on the Sunday? Eh? Eh?

Albert how did your PC like being turned off in mid DL??  :D

Strong comments maybe but not unfair I feel. I have an opinion and I aint afraid to use it;).

With regards to the 1am curfew, I don't think anyone held anyone other than themselves responsible for their own equipment, I certainly didn't, and personally I thought the kit safer with at least one of us in their instead of locked up and us in bed with the hotel staff having access to the room. I saw at least one woman coming out of there at about 8am Sunday morning.

TBH it wouldn't have smarted so much if I'd have known it was going to happen (Bob I think it was had said that we had the room as long as we wanted) or if we'd been treated like adults when it did.

At the time I was :x :x :x but overall I enjoyed it and that was point after all. I've learnt much for our own upcoming LAN, I'm already sorting getting dedicated CS servers, and we are also having a proper 2v2 CS Tourney on proper maps with proper guns and proper 2 man teams :P . There is even some Novalogic stuff as prizes coming I believe.

Personally for a lot of us dMw folks I think the main even was meeting the lads. It was for me to be honest and the gaming we got I enjoyed immensely and the drinking even more. I think the whole aim of our LAN was to allow everyone the chance to play and from reading the BF forum it seems you guys will have a load of organisers who will do very little in the way of playing, our guys all like to play whenever they like and not have to organise raffles or stuff like that. So it was a compromise and we all took turns to do our bit to keep the ship afloat.

So whose up for a book of tickets, £1 and a chance to win a bottle of voddy?  :D    8)

TL's Safety Tip No.112: If someone drunkenly wanders over to you at a LAN and slurs 'I am going to take Stryker to a nightclub, you look after the key and lock up', tell them to piss off.  I didn't and it got me called the Fun Police and slagged off.  :(

Ah what the heck, I think I'm going to go and load deagle5 and scout alley into the MHPCS rotation just to get my own back........

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
this was also my first lan

i'm really glad that we did'nt get into "serious" 2 on 2 competition, and enjoyed the "fun" nature of the maps played

to echo what albert said the most important thing for myself was meeting the people i regularly play with online, to have a few beers and a good laugh, i think that a competive attitude towards playing would have perhaps have dampened the fun aspect

as far as the room being locked at 1am, myself and brass were staying at another hotel down the road, after just finishing a rebuild on my machine i felt a sense of security in the fact the the room (and my computer) were safe for the night.

so this was my first lan

i had a really good time

and i will be back for the next one
and any others after (as long as they remain the fun event that lanIII was)

again my congratulation to the organizers

Yeah whatever TL, you aint a labour Spin Doctor are you? That almost reasonable reason might even be true but all I'll remember is you telling us to go to bed because you've got the key and you say so and because we have to get up early for the tourney that half of us had been knocked out of.

In my opinion, you acted like and treated us like arses. So go hide on your server, put whatever maps you like on, makes no odds to me as I only play a game I like to call "Counter-strike" anyway:p.

We are all entitled to our own opinion, but that doesn't mean that is has to come down to personal attacks.

Silly I think you are missing the point.
I don't think you know how much work was put in to make the LAN work. As you yourself wrote you just arrived and hooked up your PC and you were good to go. There were lot of work put into to power supply issues, networking, setting up a machine for server usage, booking the entire venue, etc etc that were done, checked and double checked before you even arrived. You had not even thought of the LAN until a few days before the event. This LAN had occupied many dMw members and regulars for some time before the actual event.

If you want some of the things to improve then you need to help out. I tried to do my share. I don't have networking experience and as I am not living in the country some of the stuff were hard/impossible for me to do/help out with. So I did what I could do once I was there by arranging tables, drawing cables, carrying PC equipment etc.

A final note. The dMw LANs aren't like any other LAN I have been to. The dMw LAN aren't just about gaming and tournaments. It is equally much about meeting friends and being part of the community. I travelled from Sweden to meet my friends and I am glad that I did. As you wrote I didn't get to play that much due to major leeching from my HD. So? I had time to talk to the guys and ppl were happy that they got stuff from my HD. I am more than ok with that. I had tons of fun and I will gladly fly all over Europe again to attend another LAN.

Cheers,

Probably best if I leave you all now before I get to carried away with my opinions (their always getting me in to trouble:/).

Good luck with the next LAN, I'm sure you'll all have a great time.

PS. A few of us on BF have just started checking out Raven Shield online, if your interested in the teamwork side of things it's pretty essential in this game and well worth a look (and it's using the UT engine so it's pretty as anything). In fact if this was CS 2 I would be pretty happy.

No you are not alone!

Silly, I was going to delete your posts but decided to let them stand. However, I do not appreciate people slagging off those who have put in a huge amount of effort to make an enjoyable weekend for all. You are entitled to an opinion but that doesn't mean you have to be rude. You can put your point across in an adult manner I'm sure (certainly your posted article was eloquent enough and I don't disagree with any of it). TL is a sound bloke and the post he made was done in a humerous vein. If you cannot see that (either because you missed it or because you don't know TL well enough) then you should hold back from making abusive remarks.

Well.. As Sadako said.. We're all entitled to our own opinions. Me included.

I was one of those groaning when the "curfew" was put into place. I didn't see this as a show stopper as I was already 3 sheets to the wind anyway. I would have played longer but let's put this into perspective.

Had anyone asked you if it was cool to leave the Key to the last one awake? Had there been a general concensus as to how everyone felt about late-night gaming? Had any of the organisors agreed to be the last one up? - NO.. is the only answer that springs to mind.

This was my first lan too. I'm sure things could be done to improve the next one but it's important to be objective about the whole thing.

TL, Oldie, FatBob, etc. etc. could not make a decision for everyone on the spot. The night was drawing long and some peeps had already hit the sack. It's a heavy responsibility the next morning when 30 or so people are throwing accusations at you because someone broke in durring the night and everything was stolen.

Next time I say we agree in advance. That way there's no whingin' later. We need to appoint a late night Admin of sorts. Also the same person must get up the next morning on-time so everyone is happy..

And Silly, as I was your team-mate in the Tourney I appreciated having you as a partner.. Too bad I sucked!

Also, as someone who writes articles for online or other media, you of all people should be aware that your opinions will envoke a response. "Probably best if I leave you now..." isn't the mature response.

You should have the conviction to stand by your opinions. I do.

BB. I'm glad you didn't delete these posts as they don't need to be censored. We can disagree and then get on with things. It's healthy..

Now the fact that I'm going blind because of Benny's pr0n. That's not healthy...

CU's tonight..

Well I enjoyed the LAN. OK the early finish was a bit annoying, but when all's said and done TL had the key and was responsible for our stuff and he wanted to go to bed, fair enough. I've no problems with that.
I met DMW in person, been playing on their server long enough so it was good to put names to faces and only polite to say hello to them.
I enjoyed it and will be making the effort to go to the next one. A social drinkies and some CS, what more could you want (oh OK a PC that can play UT2003 would be nice)
