Hi folks,
I'm looking to get a new PC in the next few months, probably from dell, and can't really see the point in getting a new system unless it has vista on it. However I was looking for some feedback from any folks out there who have installed vista - is it worth it? My brother has it & he said there are a number of issues, especially getting hold of working drivers.
At the moment I'm erring on the side of caution with a view to getting a new system in early 2008 when hopefully all these wrinkles are ironed out. I should be able to live with the XP setup that I have now for the next 6/9 months.
Any views?

What are these issues & how bad are they?

Not seen Vista but not one heard one positive reaction to it.

Vista sucks. Period. Wait until at least Vista SP1 is out before touching it with your precious barge pole.
Vista hardware requirements > XP hardware requirements. ie you need a bigger system to go the same speed as you do on XP.
DRM is built into Vista which means you are not allowed to do with your own DVDs and CDs what you are by law often allowed to do.
Most software does not run on Vista. Check your current programs to see if they have a Vista version, many don't and of those that do I bet a chunk will be a poorly ported version, not a proper 64 bit version.
Most paeripheral companies are annoyed at the constantly changing code and also can't be arsed with the new stringent certification process introduced by MS for Vista, so many do not bother (thereby throwing out of the window the alleged security improvements). This also means that a lot of your precious 32 bit hardware may not work on the new Vista system.
The issues are there and they are bad.
My father, against my advice, bought a system with Vista preloaded - he regrets it and had problems with drivers and incompatibility even though the system was supplied with Vista pre-installed. He had a copy of XP Pro so he blatted the HDD with it and the system now runs smoothly under XP Pro. He will now not be going to Vista until I tell him to!
If you want the smart-looking brand new and much advertised MS desktop (you know the one, the one that looks like the one Apple has used for years) then you'll be needing to buy the expensive version of the Vista package as a lot of the bells and whistles (and a lot of the stuff some of us consider as basic requirement) only comes on the most expensive versions. SO you might get a brand new system with Vista and then find that the bit of Vista you saw advertised is not included in yoru version of Vista.

I can't really see the point in getting a computer with Vista at all - at least not before they are closing up to Service Pack 2 :sideways:
All reasons have already been mentioned: require more of your system, driver problems, hard to get all periferals working, lots of programs/games won't run at it etc.
So get yourself a new system, but make sure you get XP with it :thumbsup2:

Aye, I agree Bob, it's just that I can get through the next 6/8 months without getting an upgrade, & I would have hoped (perhaps forelornly) that all the **** would have been sorted by then. But given the severity of the issues TL & others stated it seems maybe not :angry:

Dell and other manufacturers are now selling systems with XP on again instead of Vista due to the massive customer feedback they received. So buy your upgrade by all means, but get it with XP, not Vista.

I think little more can be added to what Tealeaf said. I have had to sort out two Vista machines. One was an upgrade from XP which was a complete nightmare. The owner has now reverted to XP. Amazingly the second PC, which was a new system with Vista pre-installed wouldn't load any of the owners games. Stunningly that was nine completely different games from CS:Source through to Stalker. Not ONE of them would run properly. Three would not run at all, on five of them frame rates were down by about 20-40% and one game had loads of tearing and artifacts. It might have been down to faulty hardware until we installed XP. As soon as we did everything ran fine......or as well as anyone can expect on a Microsoft OS.
