BTW has anyone got much experience of linux? What is it like to use?
Im thinking of upgrading soon and im looking at alternatives, will all my stuff still run fine in linux?

I've got ubuntu as a 2nd (or 1st?) OS as well as XP on this pc now. Much of the general stuff worked "out of the box" though some of the finer points have required a decent bit of googling (though DVB cards, VFD's and remotes aren't really normal components I suppose) Not tried using windows apps via Wine yet, but I think it's fair to say the biggest problem you'll have is getting games running - although I hear Steam/CSS may now work fine?
Well, I won't be changing from XP anytime soon...
Shame that DX10 is Vista-only. Ah well. I'm happy with what I've got :).
dx-10 is likely to migrate / be cracked / etc

As a general working PC, Linux is streets ahead of XP and Vista. However for playing games it's not so easy. I think most stuff will work on Linux but some games require a good few hours to get them up and running.
WOW took me about ten minutes, Medieval 2 still isn't playable after a week of hard work.
I'm lucky enough to have two PC's. My day to day PC runs Ubuntu Linux 7.04 and I will never ever go back to windows. My Games PC duel boots XP and Debian Linux. Only when I play games I can't get running on Debian will I boot to XP.

I've installed several things via the "synaptic package manager" and they've installed but to where I have no idea and I cannot see a way of running them. The wikis and suchlike are definitely better than last time I tried linux and the programs are easier to use/install/etc, but I still come across a LOT of "tutorials" that are really written at a non-noob level.
Perhaps I will get used to it, the same way I have done with windows, but re-writing OS code and config files is tedious after a while and you just want to double-click the installer and have it install in a directory you can find. Then if it doesn't work you know where to go to uninstall it. Once set up I'm sure it's fine, but I think many users will still be alienated by the struggle to get everything to work smoothly from a fresh install.
after a bit more fighting I have managed to get Steam and CSSource installed through Wine and it did indeed load up and play (apart from a few small anomolies (splash screen was there but then the initial screen was blank. Once I'd conencted to a server and then disconnected the menus etc were visible. Ah well, almost there :)
