Title: Conduct on Boomer
Post by: Anonymous on May 10, 2007, 08:35:18 PM
Recently I have noticed an increase in the number of times I see the phrase "ffs" typed on boomer when somebody dies. This is not by visitors but what I would call regulars. If you die then you are dead, it is your own lack of skill that has put you in this position (I should know I'm an expert at it).

I do not wish to see regulars using this phrase any more; it's unnecessary, smacks of poor sportsmanship and is not the dMw way.

Thank you.

and the same thing applies to "w t f".

Not being, or trying to be funny, but for clarification, What about 'git' (in the nice friendly sense of course)

And this also goes for MH too i take it? (not that i say these things anyway)

Well, I sometimes use the w t f thing, but only when I die in an odd/weird way, and I try to keep the fact clear that it's not being said in an angry manner (adding weird smileys helps).
But today (an hour or so ago), while playing on boomer, I got really frustrated because of my poor performance and extremely high ping (which has been a constant annoyance for the last couple days), and I used certain words that were clearly out of place. I just wanted to say I'm sorry I let that happen; and that I will try to not let that happen again.

I did use *** over voice the other day as I thought the guy was hacking(Put it on adminchat to check him out, admins only).
When we played on dust2, I shot the guy with an instand headshot from CTspawn with a 4-1 as CT and he was gone.
BB, you know that I know my fair share of kills and such and flucky also but this guy would end up getting killed only when he faced 3 players against him....

I don't know...

I may be a bit "liberal"..

but, I don't class W t f or ffs etc as "obscenities"

I do however consider the complete phrase "not acceptable"

Anybody using swear words gets warned then banned afaic...

on comms is another beast.

I had to ask Icehawk to temper his language tonight(comms), which he did, and continued to do for the rest of the evening.

SJ asked me tonight, whether a foreign swear-word player name was offensive..
I replied "if it offends you, it's offensive"

my opinion: we have rules to cover obscenities...lets enforce those rules.

I'm very working class so I swear every other word IRL:flirty:

If I hear very bad swearing in either Dutch, German, (the bit Italian I speak) or English, I will kick/ban.
I would usually make a comment in their own language to warn but if they would keep it up: kick/ban.

I take it the same thing doesn't apply to MeatHook, as from time to time there is a bit of cursing (done in a light-hearted way).
I've no issues with it, just curious.

I've just re-read my previous post and realised that it could be mis-interprated.

For the record: I do not condone swearing on the server, be it written or verbal.

I think there's a point beyond which the quest for PC-ness becomes silly. Typing *** (which appears to be filtered now ...) and ffs are at least toned down, which then leads into people perhaps using replacement, less-age-restricted words (e.g. crud, bother, fudge). If *** or ffs were used repeatedly by someone then perhaps the user needs a gentle prodding to calm down. If used once or twice in an evening it's hardly a problem?

Quote"if it offends you, it's offensive"
This statement strikes me as just a bit too blunt (no, not Blunt, ...just blunt :P) as it starts to get closer to the sort of "nanny state" we all like to complain about so much. User/admin discretion and self-control is a softer approach I'd suggest. If someone is indiscretely "effing and blinding" in chat or on the vc and they do not respond to soft admonishments then a slap/kick might help do the trick. Controlling habits of a lifetime (esp on Vcomms!) can be tricky but as long as there's an effort being made, and an apology if bad words slip out etc, that's enough for me.

I think you'll find (or at least I find) most regulars will make an effort to tone down language in chat and vc but sometimes words slip out. In that case there's usually an apology following pretty speedily afterwards, a bit like the sweary relative at the family dinner party :) Most of the bad offenders tend to be new to the server or are, er, new regulars? They either show maturity in trying to adapt or leave (voluntarily or otherwise ;))

my 2c: be very careful just how authoritarian you get. The game involves killing people, splattering blood, taking hostages and bombing stuff. It's hardly PC to start with. A gentle chiding for over the top language should do it. I'd hate to have to sit through a LAN without Ninja constantly yelling "f*****r" every 10 seconds  it just wouldn't be the same:flirty:

QuoteSJ asked me tonight, whether a foreign swear-word player name was offensive..
I replied "if it offends you, it's offensive"
meaning, "I haven't a clue what the name means but if you can understand it, and are offended, then he shouldn't be using it"

My initial post wasn't clear enough. What I was trying to get at was that it shows poor spirit when every time you die you type FFS as if the other person was cheating. He wasn't! He got the better of you so shut up and move on <- what I should have posted. :)

I think I got the wrong end of the stick there BB

I agree that it shows poor spirit.

It's very difficult to sense someones mood/attitude just in chat, especially with so many different nationalities and ages on the server. Smilies help though:)

"NO WAY!" and it's variations amuse me:sideways:
"YES WAY!" me thinks:narnar:*

*Please note that this is an appropriate use of this smiley:narnar:

I would like to demonstrate a different point of view:

FFS means I am frustrated (well not ME me, but anyone, including myself maybe :-) ). Sometimes becuase I was looking the other way and then got killed, sometimes becuase I was scratching my ear and then got killed, and sometimes becuase my uber-plan failed. Demonstrating some frustration from my virtual head being just splattered on the wall by total surprise, should be acceptable. It's that kind of game. Furthremore, the one who splattered it, can't read it anyhow... He/she is still playing, so how offending can it be? Even if they could read it, it does not mean anything bad, besides "frack", as in "bugger" (hence the self whipping and not finger pointing).

However, "***" does insuante cheating, and would be less acceptable to me, although I can live with it.

If you die, I think that you should accept what has happened, sometimes I might put 'Waa?' or '0.o' because I might not have been paying full attention, and I'm trying to figure out who just killed me-But it's still my fault I died!

I don't usually feel frustrated when I die, only when I get lag.

I thought thats what you were getting at in the first place BB.  The letters themselves are not offensive but if someone types ffs or *** everytime they get shot it doesn't reflect the friendly nature of dMw gaming.

If we tolerate a bit then we appear to contradict ourselves if we then choose to enforce.
This sends out mixed messages and we risk the issue of being called hypocrites.

Plus there are kids on there, and setting the tone friendly but firm is the one I am most comfortable with.

It's something like ....

"It's my practice to kick donkeys"

or a more contemporary transliteration could be

"I have a propensity to kick asses / (ass?)" or I'm not sure whether it's more 'I kick ass'

Is this close Sith?
