Title: John Grisham - Marvelous!
Post by: Coaxafkone on May 11, 2007, 12:57:02 AM
Now, I was never much of a "reader" but last year i came across a Book entitled; The Last Juror by an Author called ; John Grisham.  I was 16 when i read this and thought at first it was going to be a bit heavy, and political for me. However I found it was the complete opposite!

QuoteIn 1970, one of Mississippi's more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college dropout, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper.

The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courthouse in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

But in Mississippi in 1970, "life" didn't necessarily mean "life," and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began.
I must say this is the best piece of literature i have ever cast my eyes over. Although it is harrowing at times, i recommend it to any/every book fan. You really get a good feel of the characters and their personalities, their surroundings and it's atmosphere of 1970 deep south. A real tear jerker at the end too, (but thats all I'm going to say :norty:).

IMHO start with the earlier ones - the ones on which he made his name.

Things like Pelican Brief, The Firm, The Client are classic

My faves were: The Client, The Brethren and the Runaway Jury I think although it's been a while.

Great read...

It's nice to see that reading is not a thing of the past. I've read most of Grisham's stuff and they're not half bad. Bit of a Steven King man myself. An evening's not finished until I've had a read, no matter how late it is or what the book is.
Reading is for people with imagination. :thumb:
