As some of you know I have earlier been involved in different Sim Racing Leagues. Even though I love our current game format, I miss the thrills and anticipation of league racing or just to have one race to plan for and look forward too.
Now we race about one week one each combo, we test setups, we practice lines, all a race driver would do, just to one day enter the server to find a completely different combo and it all starts over. There is no "finale" to the week. We need a proper way to get payd back all the hard laps, all the setup tweaks and all the trips off track of the past week.
We need a *race*.
So what I will propose here is a slight change to our game/race “format”.
I would like us to schedule a few weeks ahead. Select the tracks and cars to be used each week. Like once a month.
Say we change tracks on Friday. We practice like we do now. Same kind of races, same length. Then Thursday (any day, prefereably not weekends), we set up practice, warmup, qualifying, and a longer race, at least twice the standard length (40-60min). Another possibility is 2 races with inverted grid and/or addedd mass in the second race.
On these race days we would only allow registered people. We get a weekly winner. And no points are given. No prises other than beeing this weeks Champion.
This system could we start using right away. But I fear this format would always show the same people winning every week. Some may think that is bad. But if we wanted we could take this a bit further, we could add the points for one month. Then each month we get one overall winner. To make it even more interesting, the weekly winner needs to carry weight next race (reset every month).
If needed I could do the the pints eh - points calculations. But we should keep it as simple as possible.
How about it? Anyone up for one bigger race each week?
Verner aka Vobler
+1 (As they say on LFS forum) There's merit in that suggestion.
Yah, go for it
Let's do it. Small race committee needed so burden is shared - say three people?
So, hands up who will give Verner a helping hand?
:getmecoat:  Oh orlrite. :)
I must admit that I had suggested longer races in the past and this sounds like an ideal opportunity to jump on the band-wagon and look like I'm being proactive and doing something. I don't actually know what I'm doing but yes I wholeheartedly agree.
It's just that I've got sucked back into CS:S so I may not be there as often :crying:
I appreciate im not the most serious racer here so i can understand the frustrations of not having a proper race. But i dont really think i would join in on the weekly race night competition, i just prefer to join when it suits have a laugh then join in next time i have time.
Thing is during fun races we have now if theres a bit of rough stuff not much is said we just get on with it might be a bit of swearing but not much.
I fear after a few months people will become a lot more competitive and less prisoners will be taken leading to falling outs.
Only time will tell. Dont mean to be negative just my thoughts thats all.
Cheers Stu.
You do have a good point about the falling out stuff. I like to think that we are grown up enough (not that you'd guess after tonights Ventrilo performance :D ) to not let it get out of hand. Besides, it's not obligitory to join although if you wanted to come on on a i.e. Thursday night it would be good if you stayed for the whole stint. Anyway, early days yet.
P.S. bit of a mega post for your 4th
Wow. does sound interesting.. I'd like to see how this develops.
NF
A thought. If we've been using a particular combination all week is it really necessary to go through the practice, warmup, qualifying scenario in a formal way? Maybe a slightly longer qualifying would suffice. (I tire easily)

I know what you mean Stu, and I have thought about it. What seems to be the best thing to do is to start easy.
Not even plan the combos ahead, we just make one night "endurance night" or "long race night". No points are given. All people allowed. Warning about long race given.
That way no points are lost in heavy battle and there would be no reason for anybody not to join.
Stoney, Deetz and other fast guys should be asked to voluntary use added mass or intake restrictions on their car to give them good racing against slower cars.
Mind you, in a formal race no communications are allowed, not even smileys.
Incidents are reported after the race, and proper penalties given.
I also need to add, racing *IS* about being competetive. We all want to win. The clue is to do it and keep everybody happy.
Quote from: Doorman;190047A thought.

Yes I think it would.
Would this require a rotating set of stewards to ensure order is kept?
I've got no real input into the idea, I'm happy to try it and see where we end up. Usually somewhere gravelly or armco flavoured.
Quote from: BigFatCat;190070Would this require a rotating set of stewards to ensure order is kept?
No, no need for stewards and such. We should just start out with one long race after a week of racing one combo. If people like it, we will use it, if not it will die out.
Simple realy.
Only one things need to be set;
The Day to race
I prefere thursdays of different reasons.
The following day we change combo and start over.
Oh boy, I would be so up for something like this, & would not at all mind a handicap of some form if it means some good close racing. :D
Thursday nights would be a good night for me.
Come on :boxing:

Good, don't listen to 'Cat. If you want to use one, find a handicap that slows you to our pace, but does not rob you from winning unless you make a mistake.
We have not changed combo for a while, but I suggest we race TBO+LX4 on Westhill, and race them Thursday night.
Suggest race start 2130 my time (2030 UK). 15 min qualy start at 2100 (2000 UK)
How does that sound?
Sounds good :)
Is it possable to turn on the stats again? it would make working out the handicaps a lot easier.

Stats were broken by the Insim changes in the latest patches. The author has, so far, said he won't be fixing his app. :(
I'm keeping my eye on a couple of replacements.
If this is going to be trialled this Thursday, might I suggest any rules are laid down clearly before we get there?
If there's any handicapping, let's sort it out now so that we all know what's involved come the green light. Will the first race be handicapped, using a previous set of results or be the first result that subsequent rounds will be based on? Would any handicapping be down to weight, power (both user enforced and subject to possible underhanded dishonesty:sideways:) or a time penalty/adjustment?
I'm not suggesting anyone would cheat of course, we're all far too honest for that.:norty:
And I'd better start practising in the LX4 again, I'm quicker in the FXO:doh:

There are NO other rules than we usually use. No one needs to use a handicap. It is up to each individual if they want to just leave us behind, or give them selves a little handicap to make the race more interesting.
The race starting at 2130 my time (2030 UK) will probably be 20 laps. Thats all the difference.
Sort out the fuel, tires, setup etc. in the days to come.
Hi
It does sound like fun and after thinking about it some more i would like to join in but as i have said im not letting my life revolve around internet matches. So if im there then im there good luck to all.
Well it went ok, no one crashed and everyone finished.
Replay (http://www.subsync.plus.com/lfs/WE1_race_25L_2R_9F.mpr)
Thanks for the replay Ben. :thumbsup2: 'Went ok' was a bit of an understatement, I thought it went pretty well. Apart from: I very nearly laid waste to a session of qualifying  However we got off at 8:30 on the dot. :) Speaking for myself I had some very good racing with several people, notably Octane, until I ran out of fuel on lap 13. Really, really, really intended to pit on lap 12 but had a brain seizure instead. Many thanks to Verner who kindly helped me make it to the pit with a very welcome push. Anyway, I think it bodes well for the coming weeks. Well done everyone. :dmw: ftw
Server held up then. Phew! :D
Doorman ran out of fuel ..... Looks like I missed a great snigger moment.
Here is my report:
We where/results
1. FACCalibra (Calibra) Finland
2. HR|F.Enersen (audimasta) Norway
3. HR|Kjønnøy (MyBoss) Norway
4. L56
5. o000o
6. BigFatCat
7. VoBler
8. Octane (Germany)
9. Doorman
10. HR|Heitmann (bluejudas) Norway (DNF)
So we had a nice mix of locals and visitors.
One guy disconnected just before the race.
HR|Heitmann said later on the LFS Norge Forum that reason he disconnected was that he found it impossible to drive with sun directly on his PC. (He lives in Spitsbergen! Always sun there now.) General comments is that the HR guys will come back from time to time. They suggested we make a thread on the main LFS forum. (But for that we need an event name!)
Smooth arrangement as Doorman said.
Both Ben and me started with qualify fuel so we had to change our pit strategy in race and pit early. Mid race was uneventful. Should have pushed more... I lost a few seconds pushing Doorman. Against the end I gained a little on BFC, put in my best of 1.58.8 but slipped up and lost it.
L56 and Ben did a very good race. Best of the "locals". 4th place is podium against guys like Calibra who did 1.56.1 in the LX4.
Great race! Can't wait for the next.
Verner
And I took a class victory, in the FXO!:yahoo:
Minimising sliding paid off with lower tyre temps and allowed for some early race squabbling with the rest of the backmarkers, 25 laps later and the fronts were a little "secondhand". I ran some race distance tests and I preferred the FXO to the LX4, as I'm quicker in the FWD.
Can't hold a candle to the front of the field though, they're off into the middle of next week.:byebye:
Catching me is one thing, Verner, I can make a FXO quite wide:norty:

Do we really want to advertise? Not from where I'm sitting. As I see it our Thursday nights will become more popular by word of mouth. That way I don't think we'll attract the 'gunslingers'

Agreed!
Pretty soon you'll need a Newbie server as well!
And I missed it! :ranting2:
Oh well the bike ride didn't finish until just after 8. I had one minor spill, got muddy and grazed my shin. By the time I got home the dinner was on the oven and it was 8:20. Didn't leave enough time to join. Looks like Thursday nights is not a good one for me because I can see the bike rides getting longer .

Change the bike night to Wednesday. :flirty:

Start earlier.
C'mon man. Use ya initiative.
Well last nights race was 50 mins, so if we aim for a 45/50 min race each time, it could start later at nine-ish.
?

Yes, agree with Ben. No reason to start the main race too early. I'm sure it would work starting at 2200 my time (nine-ish to you :-)).
Early risers just need to run normal races or practise until the qualy starts.
Doh, missed it. :frusty:
I'll make sure I'm there this week. :)
OK, how about this then? Qualifying starts at 20:30 for 20 minutes, race starts at 21:00. The only reservation I have is that I will be starting the race as I'm entering my tiredness zone. So I reckon I'll come onto the server a bit later.

I might miss this one too.

Nope. All sorted. I'll be there :D
Phew! I hope you didn't have to kill anyone. :norty:
Sorry i couldnt meet up tonight guys. Something came up :crying: Anyways...how was the racing? l33t?
Quote from: HR | F.Enersen;192063Anyways...how was the racing?
I think the race was good. Alot of close racing. 19 people did the qualy, 11 finished.
Winner was HR | Heitmann. I think he impressed everybody with his fast, consistent and clean driving. I think he had some kind of mishap, but he managed to get back in the lead.
[DR] Tys came second battling Heitmann the whole race.
The third guy on the podium was dMr Deetz. He did a very consistent race with no apparent mishaps, but was not able to catch up to the leaders.
There was some lag problems in the qualy and beginning of the race. I had a mishap due to lag in the first few laps and lost 10 places and the fight with BigFatCat.
But overall, a good, fun race for me.
Verner aka Vobler
I'm disappointed you didn't note my achievements. Spent most of the race in second to last place and finally managed to battle my way though to last. :woot2: In all, a good race. A few plonkers present but they didn't cause too many problems.

How many laps is Thursday going to be, 24 or 25, maybe more? I need to know to get my race simulation system's data to be accurate and plan my stop strategy.

25 laps. Don't forget the average rpm/gear ratios/wind direction aspects. I have fallen foul of not taking these things into consideration and embarassingly ran out of fuel. I'd HATE for that to happen to you! :norty:
