Title: The Curator
Post by: Nefertem on May 31, 2007, 09:36:43 AM
Couldn't find anywhere else to talk TBC tactics so I just put it here..

As most of you probably know we had some decent tries on the curator, but didn't get him down.. We seemed to have a lot of problems with getting the Flares down in time to nuke him during his evocation..

ampwow.com has some good descriptions and suggestions to how the bosses in TBC is to be taken care of.. Clickeh to Karazhan (http://www.ampwow.com/wow/viewBCStrats/Karazhan.php) (Curator at the buttom)
There is also a number of videos on youtube and www.warcraftmovies.com (http://www.warcraftmovies.com), which people can watch to learn more about the fight(s)..
This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy59cqiuFRc&mode=related&search=) from youtube seems to resemble the tactics we used last time, and has some explaining texts aswell..

Some guilds use some melee dps (which we didn't really bring last time) to take on some of the adds or stay on the curator all the time..
Melee dps isn't all that important though.. I've be told by various people that they use a warlock (as its usually the caster class with the most health points) with some resistance gear to take the arcane bolts and also to take care of the flares..

Anyways, which tactic will work best for us, I don't know, just wanted people to look into the fight so we can be prepared to take him down next time :flirty:

Aye the trick with the Curator is to deal with flares properly.

In Genesis we have one MT on the Curator (he does not hit that hard).

Other melee DPS goes to the flares and ALL other DPS hits them until they are down.  When a flare is down and no new flare has yet spawned then let the MP5 rule take its natural course and help regen your mana - take a break!

If there is an add spawned at or just before Evocation then we let the non-MT melee DPS deal with it and all other DPS goes to Curator.

When Evocation comes you blow all trinks and specials and max DPS (don't forget to use all of your instant casts too) on the Curator.  You aim to reduce his health by at least 33% per Evocation.

When Evocation is over then all DPS plays catch up and returns to the flare (which may have been up the whole Evocation) and any new flares.  Once you have caught up, MP5 again and wait for next flare or next Evocation.

Spreading out is defintely needed to avoid excessive chain lightning damage.

h     C     h

d     mm    d

h   d   d   h

C=Curator
m=melee
d=ranged dps
h=healer

If the raid makeup varies then just squeeze the extras in somewhere and all shuffle round a bit to maximise distance between you all.

As for the hateful bolts then just heal whoever gets them (say on TS if you get them so healers know), if a lock using DOTs gained second aggro then great, but usually someome else will overhaul their aggro during Evocations anyway.

That was pretty much the tactic we used, but the flares always went down just as the new one arrived, and a flare always spawned just before his evocation, so we tried letting me taking care of that flare.. although a bit hard as the flares doesn't have normal aggro before it reaches its random target..
and close to second evocation the casters usual had mana problems and there were often about 2 flares out at the same time as they weren't going down fast enough.. We didn't bring any melee dps except me and Gorion..

The problem sounds like a simple one then, you need to up your DPS.  Flask it - flasks are cheaper than pots these days and persist through death, so they are an easy way of upping DPS on progress raids when you might wipe a lot and are cheaper than putting two fresh pots on for each attempt.  Add food buffs too.

Casters should expect to have to use mana pots and mana stones when learning the fight (and before your mana pool and gear levels up) .  They should be used at the earliest possible opportunity so as to get the cooldown started as early as possible.  All casters should be at pretty much full mana at the first Evocation if they have done this.  You will probably not have time to use your evo spell during the fight until your DPS is much higher, so try to get through the fight on mana pots and mana stones or the raid loses too much dps when you take 10 seconds out to evo yoru mana back.

Also check your DPS meters - are there any weak links in your DPS?  No offence intended to anyone, but the Curator is the keyholder to the rest of Karazhan and he is intended as a DPS check not a tank armor check.  If people are not pulling their weight on DPS then all casters will struggle for mana.  If you have weak links then replace them with better DPS to make sure you do not cause dps casters to go OOM.

As a mage, the flares mean at best in a higher DPS group two scorches, or if we have a lower DPS group then I cast one fireball and one scorch.  After that they are dead and gone.  If you end up doing 2 fireballs and a scorch then others (and possibly you too) are not doing enough DPS.

Speaking of mages, I know Sheepy's current gear and if he pots up then he will be pumping out a very similar level of DPS to my mage when I do that fight with Genesis and that dps level is more than sufficient.

What you may need to do if people want to get through the Curator fight is to start looking to spend some gold on enchanting your gear to give you that edge.  At most it sounds like you are maybe 20% down on your DPS.  Most of this is recovered by flasking and the rest could easily be covered with enchants.  Go spend some gold and then you'll get past Curator and can then choose to go to any of the following fights in any order:

Netherspite
Illhoof
Chess (free epics) > leading to Prince
Shade of Aran....and of course the summoning Nightbane questline.

Hope this helps.

Tip for Mages:
Get an 'evo set' of gear.  I have a staff and a wand which I swap in when I want to use my evo spell (remember: you can swap weapons in combat).  Both these weapons have a lot of Spirit and the staff has a +Spirit enchant on it too.  It mean that rather than gaining the normal 3.5 - 4k mana from an Evo I gain 6.7k mana.  The productiveness of evo is based on your Spirit.  Increase your Spi and your mana returns from Evo go through the roof.  I also have some cloth armor items with high Spi which I swap in when out of combat and making water - over 9k mana is possible form a max Spirit armor set!  An addon like Closetgnome can handle the gear swaps with a simple click of the button and another click will swap you back to your DPS gear.  Hope this helps.

I'm very interested in some BM runs as well, as the first boss there drops a ring I'd very much like one (or two) of for my tanking gear!

Sorry Sheepy, but I lied to you there. The ring I want drops from the first boss in Durnholde, not BM... But I'll come along giving you a hand anyhow if you need it - I still need some more rep in there myself as well :)
