Title: Item and icon links
Post by: Bob on May 31, 2007, 02:57:18 PM
I remember there was an old thread about this when it first was introduced, but I couldn't find back to it, so sorry for making a new one about it.

Pre-patch items such as the Stormrage Cover work fine both with item link [item]Stormrage Cover[/item] and icon link [itemico]Stormrage Cover[/itemico]
Almost all TBC-items however doesn't seem to work at all - with Earthwarden for instance you just get [item]Earthwarden[/item] and [itemico]Earthwarden[/itemico]

Is there some kind of database that could be updated to include all the new items as well or something?

Most of the items i linked in my tailoring thread weren't there when I linked, but they are all now.. So apparently someone or something makes sure it gets in there :g:

They link to Allakhazam from what I recall.

[item]29171en[/item] [itemico]29171en[/itemico]

Once the data has been pulled over once, then it will know it for next time already as it will be held here already.

For difficult items try using the item number.  In the above example the item number in the Allalkhazam url for the item is 29171.  My link was therefore:

{item}29171en{/item} {itemico}29171en{/itemico}

Replace {} with [] for it to work!  The addition of the 'en' gives the english language version of the item.  No idea why your specific link would not work though..../shrugs

I note that Bob's first post is now working.  As the code used has not changed I am assuming that it take a short while for the item to be called to the database and then refreshed for you to see on screen?  Or maybe using thew item number was what forced it into the database. :unsure:

I noticed that the link before it got fixed, was pointing to this forum, and had the name of the item, together with something that seemed like some kind of query, so it might have been that when I clicked that link, some process to retrieve the item data was started.

But it wasn't like this when we first got this system - than all icons worked straight out of the box. Is it perhaps possible to do some kind of bulk update of the database, so that all (or at least most of) new items from TBC gets included?

Yep, all you have to do is do a forum post with an {itemico} or {item} for each of the individual items and then when it is posted go and click on each individual link once.  With 40,000 or so items it shouldn't take you too long...... :roflmao:

Seriously, getting *all* the item data would be a waste of bandwidth and server time and would just clog up the system.  The real reason is probably that Allakhazam are now far slower in providng the data due to more people using the system.  So adding to the volume by leeching all the items in one go would probably not be a good idea.

Har har :sideways:

But just a last question than: what is it that triggers the fetching of the item data? Is it enough that the item is correctly linked, or must also the link be clicked once for it to work?
Cause if it's the first, we'll sooner or later get all the stuff as long as people remember to use the icon-links. Guess we'll get eventually get 'em if it's the latter as well, but it'll probably take quite some longer, as people most likely won't click that often on the link when it's not working :g:

Clicked = first fetch of the data.  Simply posting it does nothing until someone clicks it.

If you take a look at [post=192068]this post[/post] I made in the jewelcrafting section, there sill seems to be a problem with some items.

All the three pieces from the Heavy Clefthoof set shows correct (and none of them did that when I first made the post I think, so they have been loaded), but neither [item]Exorcist's Dragonhide Helm[/item] nor [item]Shoulderpads of Assassination[/item] get an item link. I have checked that the names are spelled correctly, and I have also clicked them several times over the last couple of days :g:

Giving it a try here:

Shoulderpads of Assassination -> [item]27776en[/item]

Edit: hmm, didn't seem to work...

it's fine. what you have to do is after you click on the link to re-fresh the database you need to either edit your post or post them again for them to show. This is how the system works and I have mentioned this before.

Thanks for the info :thumbsup2:

But when you say edit - is it enough to just hit edit and save the post like it is, or do you have to make some changes to it as well (like just add a period, a line break or something)?

just edit then save should be enough.
