Title: Existing Core 2 Duos face early demise
Post by: DuVeL on June 22, 2007, 08:21:05 AM
Less than a year has passed since Intel launched its current Core 2 Duo E6300, E6400, E6600, and E6700 processors, but according to a report by DigiTimes, the chipmaker is already planning to discontinue them (http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/MailHome.asp?datePublish=2007/6/20&pages=PD&seq=222). The move would leave room for the company's upcoming Core 2 Duo chips with 1333MHz front-side bus speeds (compared to 1066MHz for existing models), thereby increasing the adoption of 3-series "Bearlake" chipsets. DigiTimes says Intel will stop taking orders for Core 2 Duo E6300, E6320, E6420, E6600, and E6700 chips, as well as the Core 2 Extreme X6800, some time in the fourth quarter of 2007. Final shipments of those chips will go out in the first quarter of next year. That will apparently leave the Core 2 Duo E6400 as the only survivor from the initial launch lineupâ€"others will replaced by E6x50-series chips like Core 2 Duos E6550, E6750, and E6850, which are said to have respective clock speeds of 2.33GHz, 2.66GHz, and 3GHz

Nice one Intel - so most current motherboards will have to be replaced as they wont be able to cope with an increased FSB speed?

Some boards are capable of the 1333 fsb, some are not, depending on the NB chips

I'm planning to get a lower end C2D with one of the newer chipset motherboards anyway... :)

Only if it blows up and you want to get a like-for-like replacement, surely? If you want to upgrade you'll be in the same boat as all the other people with 'old' Core2Duos, and you'll have to replace the mobot etc as well.

True, but hopefully by the time that happens I'm up for a new Computer/Shuttle.

I'm pretty sure there'll be a thriving 2nd hand market for some time, and by the time that's running thin on the ground we'll be another step or two down the chipset chain.

wait until the price crashes and pick up a spare cpu?

At least my new MB supports the higher FSB.. Luckily..
