There are 3 entries for rates in your config.cfg file.

The entries are:

rate
cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate

If you are on broadband you should have the following as a minimum:

rate 15000
cl_cmdrate 50
cl_updaterate 50

although you will prob find

rate 25000
cl_cmdrate 50
cl_updaterate 50

more useful

If you have an older PC/Graphics card you may want to limit the maximum FPS by adjusting the fps_max setting to 60 or 100. This entry is also in config.cfg and will look similar to:

fps_max 100

You will find your config.cfg in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\email address\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg

I would try 25000/50/50 and set fps_max to 100 and see how you get on. With a high ping you may not want to put the update rates above 50 but we can play about to see what suits best.

rate is not there by default, so just add a new line with "rate 15000" (as an example). As BB says in the next post :flirty:

there should not be a rate setting with nothing attached. There might be a rate setting with a number beside it. make sure the number is greater than 15000.

Do not edit out cl_cmdrate 50 and cl_updaterate 50. You need to make sure that the entry equals this. If when you connect your rates are being changed then they may be getting set by another script that is running on your PC (ie userconfig.cfg or an autoexec.cfg

The bracketing will not make any difference you can write it with or without them.
