my best friend told me this one. its very good:
there are 3 friends who meet again after a few years. they celebrate together in a bar. the waitress comes with the bill; its exactly 30 euro.
one of the man suggest that everyone just pay 10 euro, so they dont have to look for change. they do so.
the waitress gives the 30 euro to her boss, but he says that one of the men is his buddy, so she can give them 5 euro back.
on the way back the waitress think: 5 euro divided by 3 people...
she dont want to calculate or looking for small change so she decide to give everyone of the men 1 euro back, and keep the remaining 2 euro in her own pocket.
so far so good.
every men have paid 10 euros
then every men got 1 euro back from the waitress
which means that everyone of them have paid 9 euro. right?
(when i pay 10 euro to you and you give me 1 euro back, its the same like i gave you 9 euro...)
so, 9 euro multiplied by 3 men is 27
and 27 plus the 2 euro that are in the pocket of the waitress is...
wait a second... :g:
have you any idea to solve enigma? :D
Quote from: Hektor;198221have you any idea to solve enigma? :D
30 - 5 refund = 25
25 + (3 x 1) = 28
28 + 2 from waitress's purse = 30
What enigma would that be then? :g:
Quote from: DogMeat;19822230 - 5 refund = 25

unlogic, they did not pay 30 euros, they payed 27, the 2 euro she kept, comes from the 27, cuz the boss only wanted the 25 euros :sideways:
so its 30 - (5-3*1) - 2 = 25 euro :flirty:
Keep the change luv. Er...you doin' anythin' after work? :norty:

sorry guys. im afraid you all are on the wrong track :D
your calculation is right dog meat, also yours luminance...
BUT! i didnt calculated it the way you were doing it!
if you think my calculation is wrong, then show me what exactly is wrong with it
you didnt do that, you just made a complete
other calculation!
you see, your calculation is different from mine
its not the point to think about another calculation, you should, if you think mine is wrong, show me the mistake ive made :D
btw, it isnt really unlogic lumi...
my calculation again: 10 paid, 1 euro back = 9 euro
3X9 =27
+ the 2 euro =
29 eurowell, theres obviously a contradiction. can you solve the contradiction by finding the mistake ive made (if there is any logical mistake)... thats basically the enigma. :)
well it was my fault i think, because i didnt make the task clear from the beginning :byebye:
PS: im looking forward to see your suggestions!

im not sure, do you think 2 euro is enough bakshish?

As you wish.
The wrong calculation is adding the 2 euros to the 27 when you should be subtracting it.
Happy now?
30-5=25
25=8+8+9
so if she gives 3 back it will be
not 9+9+9 but 9+9+10 = 28
28+2= 30

im happy, but not because of your answer :D
however, ill solve the riddle, as i said i found it very interesting:
this enigma is from albert einstein. back in his time, and still together i think, people think that science is the highest criterion for trueness.
when something is logical or proven in a scientific way, it is true.
altough we all know that science is always fallible (the earth is in the middle of the universe... and so on and so far...).
with the thinking that science is ultimate, the scientists become inflexible in their mind when someone comes up with a new theorie which doesnt go along with the other modern, established, scientific facts.
well, to make it short, there is no logical mistake. with this simple, but logical example, einstein wanted to show that science, espacially math isnt always infallible. altough there is no mathematical mistake in the calculation, the result isnt correct. there is a contradiction. actually its a very small mathematical proof. the result is to falsify certain cathegories.
i think this applies also for our way of thinking. we use sanity rationality or a logical way of thinking (at least a few of us ), and judge everything with this criteria. tbh i cant think of any other way of thinking then a rational way, but i guess that doesnt mean that its the only true way (think about the yin yan thing...)
i guess this enigma is basically about the old sokrates wisdom:
"De omnibus dubitandum!" - (you should doubt everything!) :byebye:
Quote from: Hektor;198321well, to make it short, there is no logical mistake.
Yes, there is. As Doggers said, you try to add the 2â,¬, when what would be correct is to subtract them.
We can all agree that the three gents ended up paying 9â,¬ each, which makes a total of 27â,¬. Those 27â,¬ includes two things.
#1: the 25â,¬ they were charged for the food
#2: the 2â,¬ tip for the waitress
This makes a total of 25 + 2 = 27â,¬, which is what they payed.
The logical error in your first post, is that you try to subtract 3 from 30, and than add 2, and at the end ask why 30 - 3 + 2 doesn't equal 30.
The "trick", is that your argument is formulated in such a way that it sounds logical when you read it briefly, but it falls apart if you look at it the way I just wrote above.
30 - 3 + 2 will never be 30, everyone can tell that. You just managed to "hide" that that was the actual calculation :learn:
Quote from: Hektor;198321well, to make it short, there is no logical mistake.
Apart from trying to solve mathematical problems with shonky logic, you mean? :eyebrow:
omg all c my first post...that explains it and YES there is a mathimatical error
but read my post ....
damn im smarter then einstein
all hail the arcticfire brainiac:worshippy:
i also told this riddle to several math teachers. they all agreed, that this way of calculation doesnt breack any mathematical law.
they studied math so i supposed that they were right, but...
... im not an expert with math and also the teachers can be wrong, so there is no guarantee i can give for the truth of this enigma.
you all think there is a logical mistake?... well, when there is one, i apologize to you all for wasting your time :crying:
PS: maye itll be useful to ask a math professor or someone with a very deep mathematical knowledge if this way of calculation breaks any mathematical law.
Quote from: Hektor;198373so there is no guarantee i can give for the truth of this enigma.
I'll just, a bit freely, quote The Matrix:
There is no enigma
I'll just repeat what I, and several others in different ways, already have said:
Quote from: Bob;19832230 - 3 + 2 will never be 30, everyone can tell that. You just managed to "hide" that that was the actual calculation :learn:
Quote from: Hektor;198373well, when there is one, i apologize to you all for wasting your time :crying:
And no worries - there is quite much other useless crap going on in this forum, so a small mathematical brain refresher every now and than isn't a waste at all :flirty:
It's quite interesting, this shows how a brain works more than a flaw in maths as a whole. If you tell someone to look at a problem a certain way they can get puzzled.
The £27 is the £25 + £2. But if you tell them £27 and the £2 the waitress took doesn't equal 30 they'll follow that path. (It won't equal £30 because they were paid back £1 each)
You lead someone on to thinking the £2 is whats not been acounted for, rather than the £3 that they've already taken back.
As soon as you realise either the meal only cost £25 and they paid £27, or they paid £30 but got £3 back. It's all clear.
