Title: Friends
Post by: Doorman on August 13, 2007, 11:13:37 PM
A couple of things. I've received many request from people to be my friend and I'm well flattered. :blush2:
I've not turned anyone down (would I be so rude?) however, I don't use Friends so it's a bit pointless.
I have only blocked one guy whose name is....nameless. If he ever gets a name I'll unblock him. :flirty:
Actually I'll just fire up Friends and see how many mates I've got.....:D How nice, quite a few.

Good to hear! you can never have too few friends, it's quite a useful device really, although the beeping can get annoying at times. :sideways: I believe i have you on my list, i can't remember at the moment to be honest. :narnar:

I've also been getting [nameless] trying. Not a clue who this person is, if it appears again I will bloke it.

I think the Steam community Beta has not fitted in very well with Friends, as ever since I've been running it, only a few team-mates show up as friends when I know darn well that they were on my list before.

Nameless, or Unknown as he likes to be called seems to be adding everyone and anyone lately.

Here's another Steam irritation to get your teeth into. Since the last update or buying TF2, I can't get rid of the 'Store' page opening when I load Steam. The window I select to open, 'Servers', opens as well. I dug around and can find no answer to this irritation. Anyone got a workaround? If not, I may have to kill myself! :crying:

The "Store" page opens whenever I click on friends, it's really annoying. :sideways:

I have the same problem but haven't, as yet, found a solution.

Did you have any joy in removing it?

I find it's ok once steam is minimised so long as I only right click the steam icon in the tray and then select what I want- be it servers or friends. Doubleclicking on it does open the window but with the store page.

I don't get the message when I load steam but I do have it set to automatically start when I start windows and to start minimised - that's a workaround of sorts (if you're happy to leave it running).

Finally, if y ou look at the store page - on the right handside beneath the close window x there's two arrows. clicking on the right hand arrow changes the store page to the games page and it seems to remember that setting. It still opens but it's less offensive than the store page I guess.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but thought this might be of use....

Quote from: Lee;201402although the beeping can get annoying at times. :sideways:

You can actually change the steam friends notification sound as i find this sound annoying :ranting2:

all you need to do is go to:   C:\Program Files\Steam\friends

In that folder you will see a file called 'message.wav', make a copy of this (if for some reason you need it again) and replace it with a sound file which is more pleasing to the ear, and call it 'message.wav' (just like the old one)

Once this is done, go into the properties of that file and tick the 'read only' box, otherwise it will automatically replace it with the default steam sound, and that should be it!

Only thing to note is to choose your sound file carefully, nothing too long, loud / intrusive etc, I actually picked some sounds from (as tacky as it may sound) startrek themes as they have plenty of beeps and ding dongs to choose from, i have added a quick sample below (rar)

personally I find disabling the noise all together as the popup that a friend is online is enough of anattention grabber..

Yeah, i've actually not had the beep playing, when I reread it I had to think for a while what the beep was like! I think I just turned it off in the options. But Snokes, that's really useful to know also for customisation purposes. :D
