So //www.pcworld.co.uk is opening a store here in Sweden and i was offered a job from an old friend, anyone know anything about it? Is it good, bad, as cheap as they claim etc. etc. Thinking about changing careers for awhile.

Im a chef so its quite a change, but i worked at a computerstore for about 6 months back in -96 and then went back to making food, i dont think it will be permanent this time either but it would be nice to do something different for a change.

As long as you have no knowledge of computers and can huff like a teenager when anyone asks you anything more complicated than 'Where's the exit?' you'll fit right in.

You could be the one member of staff that actually knows his stuff, that would be good.

ignore me, I'm bitter.

I supose someone should provide a sensible answer.

PC World is owned by a major UK electrical retailer called The Dixons Group. Dixons was the creation of an entrepeneur called Stanley Kahms about 40 odd years ago. Their philosophy is by buy in bulk and sell cheap.

PC World is designed to cater for the PC illiterate consumer. They succeed by simplifying the PC buying process. They also do well by cutting costs to the bone. Therefore the tend to employ staff with little or no customer  skills or product knowledge, relying on the cheap prices and agressive sales techniqueto sell their products. They also sell software, consumerables and spares, but only those that they can shift fast. You'll see shelves of £100-£150 graphics cards but will be unlikely to see a £350 Nvidia or ATI offering.

Some of their sales techniques are said to be a tad unethical. They'll shove an extended warrenty down your throat given half a chance and their PC Helth Checks are simply an excuse to flog you more stuff. They have also been known to whip the display model of the shelf and shove it in a box when they realise their out of stock. The punter has no idea they are buying a display model and still gets charged full price.

They offer very poor business support . But worst of all is their after sales care which is almost non existant. They own their own distribution/repair arm named MasterCare. For over a decade they have appeared on consumer TV programs and in Magazine articles due to their aweful service.

Amongst many PC Literate geeks PC World is seen as a running joke and the people who shop there as clueless idiots ripe to be robbed blind and sold a box of cheap rubbish. But thats just them :-)

Sadly most shoppers are blind to the companies rotten service level, agressive sales pitch and crap after sales service when they see the price ticket is 25% lower than everyone else.

You'll get a job if the company thinks you can flog their products not because they think you'll show great computer knowledge or a caring customer focused approach. I'd guess the pay will be crap and the benefits none existant.

I worked for em while at uni.

They REALLY DO NOT LOOK AFTER THEIR EMPLOYEES.

Now I'm not saying thats the case with a sweedish branch..... but I'd beware just incase they have the same directives and procedure being passed down from the DSG top brass in the UK..... wankers.

umm I'd hope I'd not driven you to that decission on my last post.  I'd say go to the interview and see what they have to offer in terms of staff facilities, incentives and bonuses.  If its "nothing much" then its the same old PC World.

I am too honest to work at PC World.  We used to have these morning breifings and they would literraly be telling us to miss-advise the customers basically trick them into buying old leftover stock (if only because management had ordered too much nationally).  nah thats not for me I have morals.

To me the chef doesnt sound one bit swedish, just weird   :D
And im not like him at all, im a lot more like Steven Segal from under siege     "im just the chef".

...........for the uninitiated this is of course Finnish (did a course about a year ago) and the rough translation is as follows;

It is better when you have been drinking to play with yourself than attempt to make love to the wife, absolutely!!

.......JB, I despair of you, have you no shame?!!
