Title: IT Contract Rates - Help pls
Post by: Gone_Away on August 23, 2007, 11:40:13 AM
Guys,

I'm negotiating with a colleague on day rates for an IT architect of sorts.

Involed will be a complete network setup of five servers (one being exchange) a firewall box as well as switches and about 25 desktops.

Most of the kit will be supplied with o/s's pre-installed

I'll need him to map out the network before we begin so there is some planning involved.

What are your thoughts on day-rates?

NF

Dunno, but I'd do it cheaper!! :D

Mention firewall and Exchange and watch the rate shoot up.

Market rates: you're looking at £500 to £900/day depending on area of the country.

We're having a new ERP system installed and for the work they're doing they're charging £650 a day ex VAT which for the south east is very reasonable.

On that scale, not wanting to throw a spanner in the works, I wouldn't pay that much.

'complete network setup of five servers (one being exchange) a firewall box as well as switches and about 25 desktops.'

The design is a no-brainer, firewall - doddle, some file servers and an exchange box?

Desktops come ready to go.....that's 2 days work tops. Design 10 minutes, cable - day, exchange, 1/2 day, firewall 5 minutes.

I'd go sub 5.

Well you state you have 5 servers (1 exchange) what are the rest to be used for? File and Print? If so how are users logging on to machines; they only ever log on to one machine or they can log on to any machine and expect to get their desktop (roaming profiles).

I think (hope) Benny was being flippant when he said 10 mins for design/planning!

AD being Active Directory. Or a funky domain in old money.

Any organisational units or user groups with access control lists, Exchange distribution lists and aliases, etc.

The physical network is the easy part, but at least the AD can be developed as you go along if you get the early stages right to allow expansion.

I wasn't. This is fag packet stuff. You could of course make it overly complicated. One domain, single sign, exchange....you can't really design too much more than 5 servers on a flat lan with standard access.

Or maybe I'm spoiled by the talent I have around me here....

the AD could be very simple or very complicated utilising firewall tie ins and the such like with application sub links and no actuall server intercoms setup
(the AD will be the most expensive bit as its all cloak and dagger stuff to the general l'user/project manager (are Project managers and users the same???))

the LAN install will be very simple (run cables run out of ties use glue gun to skirting board etc)

installing the desktops and the servers into there physical location is back breaking for one person and the comms and server racking can look neat and tidy or like a spiders got drunk and wobbled about a bit in there...

if you want to see what some well maintained highly complicated and firewalled servers and clients look like give us a PM and ill give you low admin status and rdp to my gateway server...
