Post by: TeaLeaf on September 03, 2007, 01:16:41 PM
As you can see we have made a slight change to the forum to try to provide more 'portal' style to our dMw home.  There is plenty fo content work to finish and probably some corrections and updates to be made too.

If you find something that needs editing, correcting or updating then please post here.

The dMr stuff needs some input.  Please send any provisional text to me along with any graphics.  I'll try to act as Editor and make sure things are added pronto.

Suggestions for new sections please post here for consideration.

The dMw Gallery is open, but we're working on permissions and procedure.

Note the Useful links section.  Please start adding to it!

A further section for dMw Affiliates will be added shortly.

TL.

Looking good.
The link under Counterstrike; dMw Roster doesn't work. Also the one towards the availabilitysite (dMw Match Results).

For the rest, looking forward to the dMw-Gallery.

looks good apart from that:D

Under TCS rules it links to the admin standards.
The standards have been updated and this doesn't reflect on the linked page.

Can we have a link to the Map Pack thread (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=19981) and Ventrilo (http://www.ventrilo.com)
in the Download section.

Could you also create a new item under Counter-Strike called Admins and link to this post (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=18393).

For the web site part, I really like it. Good work :thumbsup2:
Here is what I've found worth commenting on:

#1:
Under Community Info > dMw Contacts: I don't know who currently is the Game Section Admin for WoW, but I'm pretty sure it's at least not Vargen.

#2:
When browsing the forum, I would really like it if that whole web site menu was gone. I like to have my browser window as narrow as possible, and that menu steals a a bit of unnecessary space.
For the web page, it is totally fine, but for the forum, I think it clutters up the view a bit.

And the donation link seems to be working btw :flirty:
Nice move to have it located this visible!

The menu on the side is going to stay for the moment Bob, sorry.  You'll have to widen your browser window a bit m8 :P  The idea is that it reminds people about the other areas of the site and helps navigation which we have alreayd had positive feedback on.

Would it be completely out of the question to add the navigation bar as an option in the user cp? Not that fun to browse on a 12" laptop...

Yeah, I can understand that - and very much agree with it as well. I guess the main web page will be used much more this way, which is a good thing.

I can also see it can be a good thing if you're e.g. in a forum post reading about CS, and want to quickly jump to the TCS Rules, but for main forum browsing (which is I would guess 95% (and probably more as well) of my activity here, and most others as well), it is mostly in the way.
Could perhaps an option be added to the User CP, where one could choose to show the web page menu when browsing the forum 'all the time', 'only on root forum page' or 'not at all'?

I don't mean to argue - I'm just saying :)

Edit: did some other stuff while writing, so it took some time, so I didn't see Delan's post - but that's a good point as well!

I think I use the forum in pretty much the same way Bob and Delan do. It would be nice to add an use cp option to hide it.

Its definitely better for the new comers though, and looks nicer to boot. good job.

Likewise I'm not a fan of the navigation bar. Some of us use the forum as well just a forum and the navigation bar is a pain when I use my laptop. Have it on by default but there should be an option to turn it off.

easily done, infact I've just done it :p

In your User CP click 'Edit Profile' under 'Settings & Options' in the menu on the left.

At the bottom in the 'Additional Information' box you will see 'Hide Menu' It's defaulted to 'No' but feel free to select 'Yes'

Is this ok for you all you weiner pc peeps? :narnar:

Unfortunately it has no defaulted to Yes (it has disappeared from mine and I have not touched my UserCP).  So can we change it back to default to No?  Otherwise the blind weiners might remain blind weiners and never discover the other elements that we are introducing and not be linking from the forums, but from the menu.

It seems that having made the change it is indeed defaulted still to No (show it) but that it needs you to set it to Yes (hide it), save it, then go back in and set it to No (show it) and then it shows again.  So all the weining has caused a shed load of work for the rest. Not amused.  Whatever happens we need to make sure it is forced to default to show the menu,  If people have particular requirements then let them go fix them, but we should not be turning off the menu view for the masses as it's the core piece fo the change.  And no it's not change for change's sake, it's change to deliver dfifferent services, improive navigation and greatly improve visibility of certain sections and communications.  It is also one hell of a lot easier to edit and maintain than our old website. By turning it off you'll miss out on a bunch of stuff so I urge people to try it for a period before defaulting to hiding it.

I believe Gandalfs intention was for it too work this way, On by default and able to turn off in the user control panel, for us so called whiners.

correct, and it should have defaulted to No but it looks like it will only do that for new users and not existing. A simple db update will fix that. Just give me a second.

ok, db update done, all defaulted to No. You will need to set yes again if you done that before but as TL said, only do it if you need to as the menu is there to help site navigation and there will be some spangly new things going in there over the coming weeks.

For sure the intent and work on the db is appreciated, I'm just keen that people do not plaster over the door we have just introduced without opening it and looking through it first.  Whilst you can say that some change is for change's sake, you could also say that if you took the approach of 'if it aint broke don't fix it' that the human race would still be using chalk and slates.

Fair enough :)

Just another small thing I noticed earlier today: when at school, I weren't logged in when I entered the forum/website. In that case, the left navigation menu wasn't visible when browsing the forum.

As that menu is meant to make the whole site more "accessible", wouldn't it be better if it were enabled for unregistered/guests? Just a thought.

You TL,

on the "About the Silver Oak Guardians " page:

I saw the raiding progress of SOG and saw you skipped the first kills of RG1 of Razorgore and Vaelstras.

Also the kill of Razorgore by RG2 has no raiding group mentioned.

But this portal by far is very nice....big thumbs up :thumbsup2:
