Title: sharing a blueyonder connection
Post by: suicidal_monkey on June 09, 2003, 12:13:58 AM
right, heres the way the land lies:

Theres 2 computers, one hub (normal plain old 10Mb hub, not a router, not a switch) and the BY cable modem. For the last few weeks we've been running my pc as like the server, but it'd be convenient if both pc's could be plugged into the hub and the hub into the modem so that either pc can connect independant of whether the other one is switched on or not.

Both pc's have had their NIC MAC addresses registered under our contract. Now, I am pretty sure this can be done with a router, but can it be done with just a plain hub?

No.

You either need a router or a third PC (any old spec really) to act as a gateway.

heh. I was pretty certain that was the case, but my housemate (who has a degree in computer science... ) thought otherwise. Perhaps he thought his little hub is a router. When I took my old pc out of the loop (it used to be our server) I did notice my ping become lower and more stable. Hopefully a router will have less effect on it than MS internet sharing...

I might know someone who could be selling their router as they upgrade to wireless, and I also remember in here someone having one in a cupboard they were willing to exchange for a bit of cash...
