Title: Need to revive the talks in here?
Post by: Gandalf on July 20, 2002, 10:11:29 AM
After last night, when people had to leave because the cpu was chocking seems to point that an upgrade for homer is inevitable. (Your pimping was rather successful oldie  :D  )

But if people come in, find a laggy server, chances are they are not going to come back again.

Couple of things, the deadmen home page. There was talk of this changing, is this happening? As it really needs to have the rules of engagement shown in a prominent position. And should we start a donations fund as I mentioned before, so homer can be upgraded. I think most people would be happy with this, they are getting a free, managed server to play on.

Anything else I've forgotten?

The talks of new hardware were a little half hearted as we were not sure if it were the hardware.

As I had to drop out for a while last night I sat down and watched the usage display on homer for a while.  I must say the usage patterns to me a unix geek are very strage on homer.  But what was important was while we had >14 peeps on homer the processor kept spiking a 0% idle which means there were things not being done in time, hence lag spikes.

So we need to talk about a new motherboard and cpu?

Regards,

ok, so where do we take this? start a donation fund? New hardware is great, but the money has got to come from somewhere! I still have that £100 that can be donated towards homer. Though I've just brought a power kite and have been blasting that about all afternoon on the downs with DCG. Great fun! :D

So make your minds up quick, or I'll spend it on more kites!

just had a pm from TL, he has spoken to Stryker about what is needed. I've given him access to this forum so he can see what is going on as he has volunteered to be clan scrounge master!

Clan Scroungemaster reporting for duty..... ready to rape anyone's wallet if it comes within 5 parsecs of me....hehe.

Stryker has specified:

2U Server Case (although an ideal of 1U has been mentioned)
CPU (1GB plus)
Micro ATX mobo
RAM (we have 512MB at the moment but may need to change type or amount).

I don't reckon the above would cost a huge amount, but before I act like a penguin with a swear box I'd like to have some idea of the target that has been set and where I should then buy the kit from.

I've also assumed that Stryker will put the whole lot together..... but it may be worth having a quick chat about whether a 1/2U case can take the cards that need to be fitted to Homer.  A bit if that depends upon what is on the mobo, but worth bearing in mind.

So, can I have your suggested costed solution & sources please?  I can then go and do some serious begging so that we can do this thang.

TL.

Right then:

CASE

The 1U cases start from £130... so do the 2u cases :-)

Note if we have a 1U case we will need a special low profile copper heatsink, thats another £10 ontop.  I dont mind it being 2U.

MOTHERBOARD

The motherboard would really help if it had onboard LAN.  Reson... a 1u case can only take 1 pci card.  A 2U case can only take 2 pci cards.... maybe 3 but its usually just to tight a fit.

CPU

Yes lets have a fairly good one... but its fools logic to buy the biggest bestest as the heat build up often leads to a short life span.  between 1Ghz and 2Ghz will be fine.

Yes don't worry, me and barry will sort out the build.  We'll just head off to the colo centre with the bits and rebuild it right there and then.

Hope this helps.
