Title: How to get a Formal Warning
Post by: TeaLeaf on October 01, 2007, 02:54:53 PM
I thought I would share this afternoon's pertinent experience with you.

I spend a fair amount of time away from these forums, reading, researching and   generally having fun.  One of the sites I visit regularly and browse to do WoW-related theorycrafting is //ElitistJerks.com.

Today I got a formal warning on their forums.

I consider myself relatively polite and up to date with current etiquette, so I was more than a little surprised when following a short and innocuous post about the Solarian encounter on the Elitsit Jerks forum I received a 'Warning' from one of the Administrators, Kaubel.
Quote from: KaubelDear Tealeaf,

You have received a warning at Elitist Jerks.

Reason:
-------
General Idiocy

Are you signing your posts because you're special or because you're incapable of reading our sticky threads?
-------

Original Post:
QuoteSince the 2.2 patch this fight is now a total joke.  Al'ar is patched on our server, so we did Solarian after Al'ar last night and Solarian now even manages to make Void Reaver look difficult, which is some considerable achievement.  The bomb mechanism is totally easy to handle and doesn't do any significant damage to the bombed person anyway, the need for resistance gear is zero and the level of coordination needed within the raid group is about zero too.  GG Blizz, this one has completely lost any fun to it and is now just a time sink :(

TL.

Warnings serve as a reminder to you of the forum's rules, which you are expected to understand and follow.

All the best,
Elitist Jerks
Slightly perturbed I looked up the rules (see bold below) and sure enough it says you should not 'sign' the post - yep, I was being warned for the 'TL' I habitually put at the bottom of my posts.
Quote from: EJ Forum Rules* If you "sign" your posts, you will be mocked. You have a profile in which you can and should put all relevant information such that it already appears next to every post. Personally I think the mockery itself and the herd mentality that gives rise to it are as stupid as the thing being mocked, but nevertheless, you don't want to type your name or your initials or some fancy symbol at the bottom of every post. People here will probably ignore what you posted and just make fun of you. It's like being a fat kid.
Fair cop, I missed that bit of their rules, but then that kind of compliance is kind of like expecting someone to immediately memorise all of dMw's stickied rules on their first visit, especially when one of the rules is an unusual one.

Anyway, just below the stickied EJ forum rules I noticed a brand new stickied post shouting in loud and rude capitals " STOP SIGNING YOUR POSTS".  It was posted by the same Admin who sent me the forum warning and it said:
Quote from: KaubelYou new people suck.

And stop telling us how you're a first time poster. We don't care, and it's probably just tipping people off that your post needs to be reported for either grammar or stupidity.
This seemed to me to be a little over the top espically when the last paragraph of their rules say:
Quote from: EJ Forum Rules* Above all, treat members of this community like you would a group of your peers and you will have an enjoyable and long stay.
In response to the "STOP SIGNING YOUR POSTS" post by Kaubel an EJ  member who joined in January 2007 posted a reply to this which said:
Quote from: Noekoecoffee please!
Sorry but if you worry about this i wish we could change lives.
He got banned.

So I posted a reply back to Kaubel:
Quote from: PM from Tealeaf to KaubelDear Kaubel

Thank you for the warning, I will endeavour to abide by your rules as I find the content interesting and enjoy my time browsing here.

I help run an online community myself, a not disimilar size to your own (ours is 20,000 threads) and I find it somewhat laughable to be warned for being what I consider to be normal politeness.  However it's your forum, your rules and I will try to remember to not sign my posts.  I am sure you will understand however that it is a hard habit to break when I have 20,000 posts or so on other forums where signing is polite and the norm and then infrequent posts here to which non-standard rules apply.

As for reading the stickies, sure, I try to read them and I admit I must have missed that small and unusual rule buried within all the other stickies in the forum.  I cannot think of another where this unusual request is a rule, but clearly it works for EJ and that's fine.

May I also politely remind you to read the forum rules yourself please?  Like the bit where the rules say "Above all, treat members of this community like you would a group of your peers and you will have an enjoyable and long stay." but you then post up a stickied thread saying "You new people suck.  And stop telling us how you're a first time poster. We don't care..." etc.  The two don't seem to align particularly well.

Finally, I see lots of graphical signatures on your forum which also re-state the name of the user.  Is this the same as signing or not?

TL. (not sure if this bit is allowed now?)
I'm now waiting to see if I get banned too.

Thank goodness for dMw and it's sensible approach to life, the universe and everything...... :dmw:

TL.

PS:  To see the formal warning and others by the busy Admins at EJ, just go take a peek at The Banhammer (http://elitistjerks.com/f34/) section of their forums.

It's pathetic... no two ways about it.

He's either:

1. Very young and gets sexually aroused by having such powers as being able to ban someone.

or

2. A complete dick with no life, no friends, one who rarely sees sunlight and feels that only online will be find true friends.

(For those of you that came from AokCC - remind you of Punching Bag anyone??).

What a spud. He deserves a slap.

Jerks is right

Quote from: KaubelWe have our own rules for our own reasons, and yours or any other outside poster’s opinion of them ultimately isn’t a factor.

Regarding the sticky post in question, it’s neither buried nor contradictory.  These forums belong collectively to Elitist Jerks, and what (and how) we post is up to us, not you or anyone else.  As for signatures, those can be turned off in the user options.

If any of this is unsatisfactory or “laughable” to you, you’re more than welcome to post elsewhere.
Well, I got my reply and I wasn't banned, but as you can see from the highlighted part of his response, just like George Orwell's 'Animal Farm' it appears that 'All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others' as he is quite happy that he is above the rules and can post whatever he wants in whatever manner he wants.

Oh well, another nail in their moderator coffin.  Maybe I should go over their and make posts about fat kids, moderators sucking and that I don't care what they think and then sticky the post.  Hmmm.  Signature first maybe.

why not copy the information over there, and then offer their members somewere more reasonable to discuss things

without spoiled babies acting like moderators, instead of sucking their mums milk?

Not worth the effort G, you seen the size of their 'Banhammer' section?  They have put in for overtime on Moderating duties.....

Bravo section. It's a 'Code of Conduct', generally saying you should be a nice lad and lead by good example and not bring any negative attention towards dMw etc.

this is the post

QuoteThe Admins have recently had a number of discussions about the behaviour of some Bravo members which have had an impact in some way upon dMw in a less than positive way. The Admins would like to take this opportunity to remind all members of the following:

General Standards
  • Please realise that when you are known as a dMw member or are wearing the dMw tag that your actions will reflect upon our community. So when you post in another forum, play on another server, or just kick around in irc, your behaviour and attitude towards others should always be exemplary, irrespective of whether or not the dMw wings happen to be attached to your name.
  • Far more people than you realise know of dMw and the information and feedback that dMw Admins receive from other clans and server admins comes from far and wide. When you TW or TK someone on another server because they were ticking you off, or when you attack an server admin's decision in public then you'd be amazed at just how often the information gets passed back to us! Your actions have a direct impact upon dMw's reputation!
Forum Standards
  • Our forums see well over 100 new posts every single day. Many of the forum topics are not seen by Alpha or Bravo Company members as they are private to Charlie, Delta, Admins, TCS Admins, match squads etc. So a member of Bravo may only see about half the forum topics that are there, a member of Charlie may only see three quarters of the forum topics. So for a dedicated member or Admin you can imagine that it can take some considerable time to read through all of the posts on the forums each day. Now ask yourself how other dMw members feel when someone has posted a single word reply to every single topic on the forum. Friendly banter is good but relevant comments are appreciated more, so don't post a reply or comment *just* because you can!
Whiter Than White
  • Wearing the dMw wings brings with it a responsibility to both the community and competition parts of the clan. We (the members) have worked really hard to establish and maintain dMw's reputation and it does not take too much for a single incident to sully our currently unblemished and enviable reputation.
  • If you have an issue with another member then speak in confidence to one of the dMw Admins. If it is something we can assist with then we will.
  • If you have an issue with another clan then speak in confidence to one of the dMw Admins. If it is something we can assist with then we will.
  • If you disagree with something then take it up with that clan/player/admin privately. Never ever challenge an Admin whilst in game on a server as it will most often lead to that Admin associating the dMw name with 'trouble' and you getting an immediate ban. This in turn is bad for dMw's reputation.
  • If you get kicked from a non-dMw server you should report the matter to a dMw Admin (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/../contacts.asp). Your PM or email should provide details of the incident, the server name and ip, the date and time of the incident and the name of the Admin (if available) who kicked you. If you have any logs or demos please submit these too. Notifying our Admins promptly of these incidents will minimise the risk that dMw's stellar reputation is in any way tarnished. Where appropriate dMw will then follow up on your behalf and this will minimise the chance that you are unfairly banned from another server.
Your membership of dMw is dependent upon you maintaining an exemplary record on all servers, all forums and in all situations. If a member fails to respect the standards to which other members adhere then the Admins will take steps to deal with the situation. Your membership of dMw is a privilege and the Admins can withdraw that privilege if you do not maintain the appropriate standards!

Wear your dMw wings with pride, spread the TCS word and enjoy the game!

TL.
