Title: Best computer games ever
Post by: JanuZ on October 08, 2007, 03:36:15 PM
I have been wondering now, while waiting for Hellgate:London to be released what other peoples all time favorite games are. I personally have played some fantastic games from the time i played on my fathers VIC20 at the age of 4, getting a NES and spending countless hours over Super Mario Bros, Zelda and Megaman, to other consoles like Sega Mega Drive, Playstation 1 and 2 and playing old classics like Doom, Duke Nukem and Quake to the favorites now like WoW, Eve Online and Civilization4.

So what i would like to know is your top 5 all time favorite games and maybe some honorable mentions that fall just short of the list. I know i could never put a top list in a numbered order but here are my favorite 5games.
My own list is mostly based on what games i played extremely much, with most games being almost a daily event for months maybe even years. Some of the games are also classics that i might maybe only play a couple of hours a day for a few weeks and then be forgotten until the next year when i boot up my old console and decide to play it again.

Super Mario Bros 3
one of the first games i ever played except for the VIC20 games i barely remember like Snake. I spent countless hours competing with my sister, by completing it using flutes or not. I have also always liked speed runs alot, so when i booted up the old NES a couple of years ago i started trying to compare my best time with the world record(i am guessing most of you have seen this video of a tool assisted run, the none tool assisted record is only 20seconds behind it). My best time running through SMB3 is 15min and 34seconds.

Zelda
This is also a game i spent alot of time playing in my early gaming days. Having Completed the first world without a single death(The game had 2 worlds set up on the same map just changed locations of secret passages and the dungeons). I spent alot of time over almost 5years in the second world knowing the placement of 4 or 5 of the dungeons but not being able to finish it because i couldn't find the flute in the second dungeon wich i knew was there but i had no idea how to find it. It was extreme pleasure when i finally found the way in. It happend when i was talking to someone holding down the forward button and not watching the TV and after all this time i finally found the way in by walking into the wall for 5seconds.

Quake 3/Action Quake
These were my first introduction to online communities surrounding games. Unlike the other games i can't really say much about this as not alot of things can be said other then I played it repeatatly for years though and Quake3 still gets pulled out during the occassional LAN for a duel vs my brother. And even after i had mostly given up on playing it I found this great mod called Defrag wich focused on Speedruning.

Diablo II
Now we have come to games that people that have been in this guild might know i played alot. I didn't start playing Diablo II until the expension was out and they had mostly stopped releasing patches for it. This was a game i mostly played Single Player first because i was hurting from the lack of ADSL(We had ADSL for a few years while living in Iceland but it wasn't possible to get here in norway for the first couple of years i lived in norway). When we did get ADSL i didn't play it only because of the extreme amount of duping and cheating online. My main quests during my Diablo II play time was gathering all the Unique and Set Items in the game and then finishing the game with every character with out boosting. I still have my saves backedup even though i haven't had the game installed for a long time. I believe i had 4classes finished through hell difficulty(Amazon, Barbarian, Sorceress and Necromancer) With a Druid and a second Barbarian almost through hell. My item collection was at 96.x% finished where i was only missing 2 or 3 set items and most of the items i was missing i had seen and lost through game crashes and corrupt character files.

World of Warcraft
Now i won't say so much about this game seeing as most of you know that i have played this game alot, though not as much as many of you :D.

Honorable Mentions
Megaman Series
Sonic 1 and 2
Rest of the Super Mario Bros games
Civilizations series
Trackmania Nations
Championship Manager
EVE Online

I'm really really bad at making this kind of lists. I'm not any good at remembering this stuff, so I'll just make a small list of games I used to play a lot before (and now):
...
and of course
I've probably forgotten lots, but it's at least some good ones there :)

My Top 5 (not in any particular order):

Counter-Strike - my introduction to true online gaming and to PCS, then dMw
Elite (the original on the BBC Micro) - ground breaking
World of Warcraft - much better than Knight Online
Unreal II - the graphics blew me away with my Voodoo II graphics!
Tetris - simple idea, but such a good game

I hope we're allowed series, becuase otherwise this'd be a long list ;)

Deus Ex (I can't believe noone has mentioned it yet), but very specifically *not* Deux Ex: Invisible War
Thief series
Half Life series (including all the free mods available for it. If you don't have to pay for them I count them as increasing the value of the original package, even if they are only fan-made)
System Shock 2
WoW
Tetris (stolen from TL, but I agree)

Those are the games that I repeatedly go back to, no matter how old they are and how many times i've completed them before. As can probably be seen, i'm a bit of an FPS junkie.
