Our washing machine has packed in, after only 4.5yrs of daily use.
It's a Zanussi Aquacycle 1100XC. The main control module has fried and it costs £120 for a new one.
Apparently washing machines these days (unless you get Miele) are only expected to last on average 4-5yrs.
I'm looking at a Bosch, which seems to be the best of the mid-range (can't afford Miele at £500+).
Those of you who know what a washing machine is :), do you know of any make that seems to be better than others?

Well me and my family has always gone Miele. Imho worth it. My sisters has been running for well.. 10 years maybe more.
Edit: Got into a chat at the bureau/office, seems LG have a good rep. Two Zanussies (washer+tumbler) that has been going for 7-8 years, both.
I've got one of those LG direct drives. Still going strong after 6 years which is fantastic considering our water is like liquid rock (plenty of calgon needed!)

yeah, though they ideally want to be on a real solid floor for the quiet. at the flat which was concrete flooring you couldn't hear it but now I'm temporarily at my mothers which is floorboards its a lot noisier :(
Bosch here. very quiet and just keeps on going
Keep clear of Hotpoint they have poor build quality and simply fall apart. Also comet and currys do a take away service for your old product so you can get them to deliver your new machine and get your new product up and running before they leave your home :).

Have had 2 hotpoints, first we had for 3 years and sold it with house. Never failed and seemed fine. 2nd HP we've have had for just over a year, still fine but there is only 2 of us and its not used daily.
Will definitely look into getting a Miele when this one dies.
Bosch / Zanussi are fine, good mid-range machines - ne'er had a problem with them.
Hotpoint and Ariston suck.... big style. (imho of course).
PEN
See you can't win here Thulsa.
Our Hotpoint just died after 3 years, but we replaced it with the Hotpoint from my rental house that has been going strong for 6 years, and still works great.
Hotpoint suck, get a hotpoint.
kelkoo.
Looks like Bosch or Zanussi. Bosch give a 2yr guarantee, however not much point as I wouldn't expect any probs until at least 4 yrs.
I'll have to ask the wife:g:
You lot are pathetic:sideways:
W T F is a washing machine?

My hinge broke after 4 years, I bought a new one for a fiver, fitted it in 5 minutes and bingo.
we use a Philco top loader, been there for quite a lot, ide say 8+yrs for sure
we had some rust on the top and the sides, but with a bit of loctite 7500 and some metal paint, its good as new
dunno any other was machines then miele really, we always use miele, 3 years back we had a new one. The old one broke after almost 19 years of loyal service (and not to mention my mother had me and my sis in cotton dipers when we where babys, and my sis uses almost 10 diffirent pieces of cloths each week (not talking about under wear). so you can guess how much it has been used :P)
I heard that both of my uncles at my mothers side bought non mieles in lower price ranges and they too are on there 2nd washing machine. Only diffirence is that they are married for 6 and 9 years resp. :)
so go Miele :D
i have a hot point fridge, freezer, dish washer and washing m/c. Haven't had a prob with any of them.
the washing m/c has been going strong for ten years. (i've replaced brushes, on/off switch and spring £15 in total)
maybe i am very lucky on my electrical toys:norty:
i aslo believe hotpoint are british, a good reason to buy buy buy
mmm sad state that i am talking about washing machines! must be getting old
Well, I'm a happy man now.
Wife can stop whinging (about this anyway)!

We've ordered the hinge for £10 (damn inflation/rip off sales people) but still. The door falling off is one of the things on my list of things that a washing machine shouldn't do. Along with flooding the kitchen, catching on fire, drowning kittens and having late night raves.

When you fit it, beware the back end of what you screw into disappearing into the machine. Undo one end, screw back into it to hold it, undo the other.
You'll understand when you mess up and have to pull the front off the machine with a crowbar...
