Title: Baby Monitors
Post by: Jamoe on October 22, 2007, 03:32:54 PM
Hi guys and gals

I've been given the task to buy the baby monitors, can any of you parents make any suggestions, makes/models, things to avoid etc?

Are the ones with cameras any good or OTT?

Cheers

Jamoe

Personally, we never had for any of our three.

imho new parents are twitchy enough without having gadgets that are designed to make them more paranoid (responding to every twitch).  Another thing we found, by not reacting to every twitch and visually checking occassionaly the child will learn that they will not get their own way by making more noise during the night and will learn to sleep through.

I can ask my wife as well (she's a midwife).

Probably not the answer you were hoping for

Food for thought cheers Target. I will talk to the wife, it will come down to how comfortable she will be with it. Sadly we had 3 miscarriages (well the wife did, I just stood by hopelessly useless), which kind of makes us super paranoid as it is.

Thanks for the link Doc, ill take a peek.

Jamoe, we have a set of baby monitors (Philips, similar to the ones shown on the link - the SC360 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-SC360-BABY-MONITOR_W0QQitemZ160169053070QQihZ006QQcategoryZ20435QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)) which you can have for free.

You're going to the LAN so I'll bring them along then if you'd like them.

As a quick comment. I was watching a show about how to look after babies in their early years. The advice that was given to one mum from an experienced childminder was that she should not react to every noise their child made and instead try to ignore them at night so they got into a routine. This was extremely painful for the Mother as i can imagine but has anyone had any similar experiences?

We got one with a camera that plugged into the telly. It was only good once they grew a bit and we could see the 3 year old tormenting the 1 year old.

You'll be up and down enough without a monitor...$0.02

It has the motion sensor. which is probably over the top most of the time. But for the first 6 weeks of little Taylor's life he had very bad mucus at night, leading to breathing difficulties. I'm sure it sounded worse than it was, but it helped when going from near choking to silence. as we could easily tell that he was still breathing.

This is not an uncommon condition and can last for a up to a year. But just adds to the stress of a tired mummy and daddy.

The other good thing is, Now we but him to bed at 7 and sit down to watch a bit of telly together, we don't sit there listening out for every little noise on the monitor, as we have the reassurance of the alarm.
