Title: Lan XII - Packing List & Instructions Thread
Post by: GhostMjr on October 23, 2007, 02:52:48 PM
Transferred from last lan thread for general reminder

GM

QuoteThis thread is to provide you with a packing list so that you remember to bring everything you should bring to the LAN along with a guide as to how to ensure your steam is up to date and that you have the relevant patches / map packs etc.

IMPORTANT:
Do this ON THURSDAY NIGHT ABOUT 10.00 PM. IF YOU DO THIS FRIDAY MORNING YOU MIGHT PICK UP A STEAM UPDATE THAT NONE OF THE REST OF US OR THE LAN SERVER WILL HAVE. THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE LAN GAME!!!!

Thursday 10.00pm
1. Connect to the Internet
2. Start Steam

3. **CRUCIAL** If you DO have the 'do not save account details on this computer' checked then enter your password and UNCHECK THE BOX. If you don't you'll loose your password details from the login screen and will not be able to play CS at the LAN **CRUCIAL**

4. Log onto Steam
5. Click 'Exit' on the Steam menu and quit Steam
6. Disconnect from the Internet
7. Start Steam and when the dialog box appears click 'offline mode'
8. Make sure Steam starts and you can fire up CS
9. Exit Steam again
10. Try restarting Steam again.
11. Run a complete Anti-virus scan.
12. Go to bed
13. Wake up
14. Go to the LAN

In a nutshell just make sure you can connect to Steam without being asked for your password. If you are asked to type in your password you're not going to be able to play at the LAN

BattleField2
The same rules apply to BF2. If a patch arrives on Thursday night then download it and install it. We hope to have an internet connection at the LAN but you never know when it might fail, so be patched up to Thursday night when you arrive at the LAN.

THINGS TO BRING TO THE LAN

Hardware:
PC - Virus & Trojan Free!
Monitor & VGA/DVI cable
Keyboard with cable
Mouse with cable
Mouse Mats
Power cables for PC, monitor etc
Panel plug (so that you can plug all of your electrics into the one panel).
Extension cable (just in case you end up 10m away from the nearest plug.
Joystick/Steering wheel
Lots of spare HDD space
Headphones (no you cannot bring your speakers )

Software:
Driver software for any hardware that you bring (in case you need to reinstall).
OS software for those hard luck system crashes followed by format c:
Games software

Networking
Your PC must have a working NIC (network card)
Ethernet cable - preferrably as long as you can get (10m would be great)

Miscellaneous
Duct tape - to keep those trailing cables from being triped on.
Hardware spares (if you have any then bring them just in case somebody else needs to swap out a CPU or HDD etc).
There is a licensed bar 10 yards from the gaming room.
There is a high street with shops, cash points etc 20 yards from the gaming room.

PLEASE KEEP THE THREAD ON TOPIC AND TO A MINIMUM SO IT DOESN'T GET TOO CLUTTERED AND PEOPLE MISS VITAL INFO.

For foreigners - you might have to bring converters to your power plugs or borrow some British power cables

A few users will have vista installed. There were some problems with connecting to the lan workgroup for vista users at the last lan but i think this may have been sorted out.

Perhaps England's greatest cultural export has been the English language, the current lingua franca of the international community. There are astonishing regional variations in accents, and it is not unusual to find those in southern England claiming to need an interpreter to communicate with anyone living north of Oxford.

When you say  Joystick/Steering wheel, its not a necessity, right? Only for the ones playing LFS and the likes, right?
