Title: Forced Cockpit View
Post by: Haddock on November 07, 2007, 06:04:40 AM
Hai!

Why the cockpit view is forced on dMr server? Is there a special reason?

I'm using this view anyway, that's not the reason for asking. But one part of fun on LFS for me is looking the races in replay - often more interesting as real car races. It is explaning situations you had different noticed during the race. And in the replays from dMr races the view from behind the car is missing.

Not so much important but it is interesting me.

I think the reason is that dMr thinks that it's the only view that should be used in a simulator.

That you can't use other views in spectator mode and not even in replay(!) is a major flaw. Hope it'll be fixed with the next patch.

I supposed so, too. But are there really so much good(!) drivers which are using this external view while driving? In earlier racing games it was a good one because the position behind the car was fixed, but in LFS it is a "follow view" and is horrible to learn in my mind.

Hopefully. Also it would be fine to install the missing reverse button for replays in the next patch. :sideways:

I think it is the only real simulator view to be inside the cockpit. I never use any other view while driving. Also those persons using the tyre only view (custom view without the car body) or chase view get unfair benefit (you see better your car position towards other cars or where the tyres are compared to curbs). The bad thing is that it also disallows those custom inside views which are only slightly changed from the fixed driver view.

The fact that the allowed views are somehow saved into the replay file sucks big time. It has no reason and it only harms those wanting to watch replays and especially film makers. I actually posted a thread into lfsforum about this, but nobody seemed to be much interested or even didn't understand me :sad:

I had no idea this was wired to the way replays were stored. That means that when watching a replay you can only swap between cockpit views? Bummer... would love to watch the lines...

Hai!

@Aquilifer:
Ah, ok...I forgot the custom views. I was testing them long time ago but it is unsatisfactory.

So my questions is answered. Lets wait and see next patch with hopefully fixed replay features.

@delanvital:
There are following views left: cockpit, tv and top. The custom/chase view is missing in replay.

Still returning to this...

I started a thread here...

Forced cockpit view because, as Aquilifer said, is the only realistic view for a sim. I know all the arguments for seeing the wheels etc. and they don't add up. When FCV first came out LFS forum looked like the end of the world as we know it! But we went FCV from the off and have never had a shortage of customers.
I didn't realise there was an issue in replays. I only ever use them as an evidence gathering tool anyway. :norty:

Jepp, no problem with FCV while driving. I was only wondering because chase view was missing in the replays from dMr server. I can live without it but it would be nice to have it in all replays (ok, LFS problem --> Aquilifer was posted it there).

Do not forget Shift-U in a replay. You can get to any camera position you want.

@Vobler
True, but it doesn't work quite same as the custom views. So you cannot really make a view which is e.g. showing the car front left tyre going up and down with the suspension. It also seems to have sometimes a bit annoying 'fish eye' lens effect if putting the camera close to a car (or any object).

But for general flying camera views it is great. Of better than the road side camera.
