I downloaded the demo for live for speed a while ago, after seeing the videos of dMr, i really enjoyed it so i got the s2 license:). I Look forward to racing with you guys. I'm only using a mouse for the moment but probably will get a wheel after christmas if i carry on playing it.

Welcome :)

I use mouse myself, but I think the learning process might be easier with a wheel.

What I saw of you tonight impressed me. I liked the way you waited for a gap in the traffic before rejoining the track. Never seen a newbie do that before! You gave way to blue flags and kept out of the way. As Aquilifer said, you don't have to throw yourself into the scenery just because someone wants to pass. If it's a blue flag, ease off the throttle and let them by. Having said that, being passed by very much quicker guys can be an art form. I have no doubt you'll learn it though. Good job! :thumbsup2:

Yeah welcome Trin. Nice driving. And you consistently improved your lap times :)

Welcome TriniDex, you put up an admirable display tonight, considering your experience and I can only endorse Doormans comments. :D Keep practicing and the fast times will come. The current car/track combination is not the easiest available and if you can manage this speedster you'll find others a lot less daunting.
Well done

Well done, a commendable début indeed. When was the last time we welcomed a beginner without a tirade of abuse????

And I'll be holding classes in what to do under blue flag situations, I get enough bleedin' practice.

I managed to stay on for a bit last night before retreating to the training laps again! how long did you practice on the demo for as you put my newbie skills to shame damn you!! lol

But as they say practice makes perfect!

So welcome from one Noob to another ;)

I downloaded the demo thingy last night, haven't had a chance to install yet and wheel/pedals are still in antic/storage.

I'll try and get some practicing done at the LAN, maybe by the end ill be at least good enough not to spoil other peoples games. Then I'll worry about lap times and car setups. :)

As long as you're clean, the speed doesnt matter. Using mirrors and judging other peoples actions is far more important. I'm a slow racer, but hopefully I'm clean enough.

I do occasionally bump, but when I do I make sure that I slow and let the victim(!) get back on track in front of me. Seems to keep people happy.

I agree with all of it. Well, except for you calling yourself a slow racer :)

Also - moving over when being blue flagged can he difficult. You are not sure how close he is and when he will overtake you. For instance, you move out of the line to let him pass, but he does not overtake you before reaching the next corner, where you end up being unable to NOT be IN the line, unless you swirl to the other side of the track. I tend to move over as soon as the monitor says blue flag, but that is a bit too early. I recommend checking the map and the mirrors

Heh, being fast once every 10 laps doesnt make a fast racer. I'm consistent, but consistently slow - 1.11-1.12 laps, and then every now and then a 1.10 or like last night, a 1.09. But thanks :)

Yeah, the blue flag sign comes on very early, treat it as a warning, not a command. Once you see it, check your mirrors, if there is someone approaching, move over. They will be faster, so keep an eye on the mirror and drive as normal until they come within 'range'.

You drive like me then :) Except my best is 1.11.10 - but I do quite a lot of 1.11's :)

When I started Lfs, I played XFG/BL1 offline some time before joining the demo servers (same combo). To be honest it is actually good to join a server and see how the faster drivers do it. I guess I was around 1:40 when I joined online for the first time (it was P or Q patch, so the times are not exactly comparable).

It is useful to observe the driving lines and braking points from the fast drivers and ask if they could share a set. I bet my improvement would have been much slower if had just driven offline.

The current combo FXR/BL1R is not very newbie friendly. I think the XFG is the best car for new drivers (rear wheel driven cars are trickier imho). Because we have now so many new drivers, maybe we could try XFG next. It haven't been used for some time now.

@Altrezia

With slower cars you can concentrate more on racing as you don't need to concentrate so much on controlling the car. When you pick up a bit smaller track for a slower car, less speed is not a problem. I've had some of the best races with UF1.

MRT's would be better, they're still slow, but fun to drive. Not the easiest though I suppose.

Hi TriniDex, and welcome.

When I got my S2 license right after release, was it spring 2005, I did not go online right away. I had never been online with any racing game, so I was kinda afraid of high requirements. I wanted to practice a lot before starting online. But it's good that you start right away, you get to learn racing basics now already. But do also do good amount of practicing offline.

My recommendation for any new racer would be to drive one combo as long as you feel that it is very hard to improve, then change the combo. When you come back, you will probably soon beat your earlier record.

When I started, I drove FXR in Aston Nat, and I would guess I did about 500 laps on it offline, and got my lap time down to 1:44 something. Back then it felt like a great time. I remember that I had to work hard to get under 1:47, it seemed like impossible. I used Analyze for Speed to compare what faster drivers did better, and I tried to learn from them. I also read some great racing books, like Speed Secrets by Ross Bentley. I had to learn so many things, and I don't feel myself as any natural talent, but I just love this thing so much that I've done some work to be somewhat decent (midpack) driver.

I've read that chess players talk about the geographics of the chess board. This came to my mind when thinking about how you need to learn a new combo. What you have to learn is to keep the car near to it's traction limits when driving a good line. If you miss the line or have wrong speed, you can't just imitate the perfect driving, you have to adjust, it's not the same corner anymore. And when you add other cars, it becomes racing.

(how do you make a nice end to the post?)

God help us when you get a wheel! Tonight on Fern bay was another example of good practice. Keep it up. :)

GREAT racing last night mate - I loved that clean lap that we shared - very close racing, no touching, and generally good manners - very impressive. When you get faster, you'll be running with the top boys, that's for sure.

Good work. look forward to racing you again.

I'm going to close this thread because he's had more than his fair share of praise. It's beginning to make me feel sick. :baby2:

OK guys!!

I have got my little GT flying around blackwood in 1:42 on average so I think its time to step it up.

So Im gonna become a regular on the dMr server I was on for a bit on sunday and found myself sliding into walls and cones for the first few laps but I slowly got it together.

What are the best times to join the server?

Hi Venom, most of the dMr folk start arriving at about 1930, current car is LX6 and the track is South City Town.  Not the easiest combo to start with!!!
Good luck :)

I think it's good to join online races at some point. I learned lot by observing faster, more experienced drivers.

The LX6/SO5 combo (SO Town?) is a difficult one. Don't worry if you hit walls etc, so do I often (especially if you use mouse). Let's hope the folks chose more racing friendly combo next thursday.
