Title: Leech PC won't post until CMOS is cleared..
Post by: Gone_Away on November 07, 2007, 08:11:25 PM
started a couple of days ago. can't figure it out.

I come to start the leech up and it won't beep.. I've taken it apart and reseated all the cards but not the CPU.

If I pop the battery and clear the CMOS.. voilla! away she goes..

do I need a new battery or a new mb?

try removing all memory other than 1 stick. if it posts then you can try the others individually until you find the bad one (I've just gone through the same thing on my main rig)

most CMOS batteries are CR2032 which are only a couple of quid each - you can buy them almost anywhere (Boots etc)

I've never found the battery to run out before I've drained all the life out of a motherboard. Generally there is something faulty, and since it's early in the boot as BB says it's most likely ram. If you clear ram out of the problem list try reseting your bios to factory defaults (could be remnant of an old overclock etc) and if even that fails a flash might fix things.
Had you noticed your system clock going and having to enter the date (or windows have to update it on booting)?

I have had two PC's and a lappy that did the same (I don't upgrade until the PC is old as ****). For me, it was the dead battery. When the PC is turned off and on the settings are not stored and the boot fails. When you boot up, enter bios and set the settings and restart without powering off the PC works until powered off next time.

Especially the time-date stuff drove me mad. My AV license would only work if that date was right, so I HAD to set the date everytime if I wanted that to work...
