Title: CoD4 problem
Post by: Nefertem on November 10, 2007, 12:02:10 PM
Well I just bought CoD4 today, and was kinda looking forward to playing it..

However.. after I had installed it and started the singleplayer version I got kinda stuck.. the game gets minimized to my desktop.. the sound is still playing but when ever I maximize the game, it gets minimized again immidiately (as in during intro and menu - can't do anything)..

There is no such problem if I launches the multiplayer part..

Anyone knows anything that might be the solution?

I do meet the recommended requirements.. I've tried having a look on the official forum, but you gotta registre and the buggers won't send me the confirmation mail so I can't read anything there..

So I assumed it worked. Don't forget to put it up again after you've stopped playing.

yea.. Was great though.. and was only on the 2nd easiest level, so not really that hard.. started on the hardest last night.. The bad guys have a serious 'nade issue :g:

I might try out the multiplayer part one of the days.. Looks kinda BFish..

Not really, in my opinion. I think they're hoping for the multiplayer component to give it longevity, with the levelling etc, but having also sat down on Saturday morning and played solidly till I completed the game (initially on difficulty 3/4, but I got to a level where you're leaning out the side of a chopper taking on ground troops with a mounted gun and no matter what I did I died as soon as we got in range of them, so I gave up and dropped the difficulty down 1 level) I can say i'm glad they didn't make it any longer. The game is absolute quality from start to finish, and I think it was worth my cash just for the single player component as it was. I'm glad they didn't make the mistake that, for e.g., Monolith did with F.E.A.R., where an absolutely awesome game was spoiled by a too long simple and repetitive run-n-gun element in the middle.

I mean, it took me about the same amount of time to complete as Nef (looks like about 7 hours, if he didn't stop at all between those posts), and that's about the same amount of time it took me to complete each of Max Payne and Max Payne 2, both of which I also thought were brilliant and well worth the cash, and they didn't even *have* a multiplayer component. I'd much rather spend 20 quid on something as short but good as CoD 4 than, say, Doom 3 or Quake 4. (Yes, 20 quid. Gamestation unfortunately seem to have put it up to 29.99 on their website now that's it's been released, but it was up for 19.99 until the day of release, and I preordered :) ). But even if it had cost me 30 or 35 quid i'd still be saying that. I paid that kind of cash for Doom 3 and Quake 4 when they came out, and this was far better.

Agree with you Carrot. Doom III became mind-numbing. You just wanted it to end, yet you were still sitting there...

Does this version of CoD still have this stuff where the enemy keeps spawning until you reach a certain point on the map?

heh.. just did that on veteran.. jeebus it took quite a while before I made it past the first guys who just killed me constantly.. I just stopped at the one were you're looking for al-asad.. Christ I just can't make it to the last place.. Will try again later..

And yea.. Don't regret buying it either.. Loved it..

Not sure actually.. it seems like it as the bad guys just keep coming, but then at some point they seem to stop so you can move forward.. although they do stop prior to that if you just push through and prey for your life while shooting left and right..

Yeah, that's what happened to me. Once I dropped the difficulty down a notch and got past that bit (by the skin of my teeth) the rest of the sequence was a cakewalk. It's just that very first bit, where no matter who i shot at in what order someone seemed to take me out before I got them. I never even managed to work out who was doing it, so if it was some group i'd not spotted and actually the same people each time. I noticed a large group of guys on the ground and a mounted AA gun on a roof, and also had issues if I made sure to mow everyone down of my gun overheating and having to wait for it to cool off.

I think they possibly have hit some middle ground here, or tailor individual encounters one way or the other as they see fit. In some areas the bad guys Just Die (tm), and then you can move on up. In others, more keep running out of the same buildings for you to shoot at until you get past a certain point. It's worth noting, however, that this style of game design normally annoys me, as I like to sit back and snipe from a distance, and I never had an issue with it in CoD 4.

There is a file in the folder called "miles" in the program directory, it ends it's something like mssmp3.asi. rename it to a .bak and try launching the program again. There's seemingly a sound problem with the original release and this makes the game ignore somehting nasty.

Can someone with CoD4 please email me the airlift.svg files from

\players\profiles\name\save\

and

\players\profiles\name\save\autosave\

as there seems to be a corruption in mine somewhere which doesn't allow me to start that level.
