After a pretty intense cod4 weekend i am sure a few dmw guys will vouch for the quality of play for cod4 for both its single and multiplayer. So my question to the community is whether we can setup up our own cod4 server and would we use it?
Thoughts gentlemen :)

I haven't played the game yet, but generally speaking our current rig is running at about 10% load so we could install a few new games on it and it wouldn't be a problem hardware or software wise.
I certainly wouldn't mind it :D
This time I might actually be able to make it in into of rambling on about starting to actually play some of the games we got around in dMw and then never get around to it :eyebrow:
As frag servers go , it was OK for a LAN. I didn't see much teamwork though and I'm not sure how we could adapt it to our style of play. I found TF2 to be a much better game and some of the tactics employed during our match made it really fun to play. :)
i was gonna say along those lines can we have a ut3 server when it comes out but not much teamplay in that really :S
Quote from: DaRkLiGhTeR;212862i was gonna say along those lines can we have a ut3 server when it comes out but not much teamplay in that really :S
Well, I think there will be. In the previous versions there have been capture the flag and king of the hill, both quite good team/objective type of games. I remember at LAN IV when we played HALO in CTF mode and also KoTH and it was really good teamplay.
The first UT had some excellent CTF maps that required that you played as a team to win.
Unreal has CTF, assault, double domination, onslaught and bombin runs. as well as deathmatch and team deathmatch. First few would support game play as well as say BF or CS.
Edit, clarified by finding proper names.
I think that cod4 was fun but i dont think ill play it again. The new unreal looks awsome though.
[BIG] have been given access to three COD4 servers:
217.146.93.56:29860
217.146.93.56:29000
217.146.93.56:29010
These are provided gratis from our server provider providing we admin them :)
Unfortunately last time I looked they were not live. i'll post back when they are. Of ourse you guys are very welcome to join us for a game or two.
[smallprint]Other COD4 servers are available[/smallprint]
Sweet, cheers Paddy, now i just need to scrounge the game somewhere :)
Bastet, check your PM.

I got that from the BiG-forums and it was the cheapest I could find aswell.
Servers have now been sorted here:
217.146.93.56:29960
217.146.93.56:28940
Both are labelled Alpha-Networks.co.uk
I use yahoo IM name biggestpaddy. If you want a slot shout me there.
Maybe this isn't the right place to ask but seems quite a few of you play cod4. So I would have few relevant questions.
I'm not a fan of unrealistic arcade shootem ups. In cod4, 'perks' is the thing I hate. I find it utterly unrealistic someone to have bit more powerful weapons thanks to some perk. But because it otherwise looks great, I ask is it possible to have servers without the 'perks' and are there many such servers?
I have only cod2 and the multiplayer maps are not very big. How big are the maps in cod4? Can you use some team tactics online?
Also...Because I would like some tactital, team based, realistic, modern war game, it seems the ArMa (Armed Assault) is the best choice. So are you playing it and have you ever planned server for it?

Afaik there is no server plans of any kind atm but that can change quickly if we find suitable candidates. If you feel that ArMa is a good choice maybe you could look into it and present it for the admins? Maybe even you could be a moderatot if we create a section for it? Enlighten us. :)
I thought the perks in cod4 were pretty realistic, whats so wrong with a radar jammer, or a stabilising grip for a gun, or a sight, etc. Plus it turns it into a strategy game, its all about using the right combo for the right situation.
Also "Search and destroy" mode in cod4 is counter strike and plays very well.
Mhhmm, might need to check out over @ http://www.tacticalgamer.com if they have a server up adn running allready.
So they have;
http://www.tacticalgamer.com/call-duty-general-discussion/102168-cod-4-server-up.html
BTW, if you wish to play without perks look out for the "old Skool" modes, as they have no perks, but they also have no classes either. I'm not sure about server options for turning them off as I play on PS3.
Quote from: Stryker;213467Also "Search and destroy" mode in cod4 is counter strike and plays very well.
I'll need to give that a try as I don't remember that from the LAN. It was all just spawn, try and kill someone, die, spawn try and kill someone, die....
I have been playing the single player and really like the graphics and gameplay, so would love to see what it's like in a Counter Strike mode. Do you stay dead when you die or still respawn?

Sorry my sarcasm radar is in monthly repair. Is that a joke? :g:
Ok, some of the perks are ok, but many of them are imho shite, like "Sonic Boom", "Stopping Power", "UAV Jammer", "Deep Impact", etc
I haven't tryed it, not even demo, but it looks so good that I feel tempted getting it. The only bad thing is the perk system which doesn't sound like something which belongs to a realistic war game (~simulator).
But if indeed you can get rid of the perks in servers, that's good. It's just that I don't want to be the only one playing without them.
About Arma. In case you don't it...
Made by Bohemia Interactive (OFP anyone?). Arma is more like simulator version of bf2. It is played on one huge 400km2 (250 sq miles) map (an island called Sahrani), between the communist north and democratic south helped my USMC. The time is a fictive 1990s (i think). The weaponry is acordingly US and Soviet origin. The good guys use M16, M4, M249 SAW, M136 LAW, ... and drive Hummer, M113, M1 Abrams, Blackhawk, AH-1 Cobra, Harrier, etc and the bad guys AK-47, AKSU-74, RPG-7, .... and drive BRDM-2, T-72, MI-17, etc. Then there are trucks and civilians with their cars. Player can use all these including the civilian cars. There are classes like: rifleman, saboteur, sniper, machine gunner and at-specialist, which decides the initial weaponry.
The map is so big that often you have to mount your squad into a car, helicopter or a rubber boat to get into the destination (wheels, joysticks and trackIRs are supported). In some online game types the map is limited to a smaller area.
Vehicles can push down fences, walls, and tanks can plow down trees. It has some interesting small details which are or are not useful for a soldier. Cars leave tracks to sand as well as infantry. Landing helicopter raises a cloud of sand and sway trees. The weather is dynamic which changes by time as well as tides, and constellations move at the night sky. Birds fly at the sky and dragon flyes, butter flyes and flyes buzz around the sweaty soldier.
The bad sides? Well I don't have a top end PC, but I think the graphics aren't quite at the same level as cod4 (judging from screenshots) and you cannot get into so many buildings. I don't know about cod4, but arma is quite heavy on your system. If you don't have enough gfx mem it starts to reduce the gfx quality (run time), the large world takes memory and the competent AI eats the cycles from your cpu.
I feel Arma is more like a battle field simulator for team/squad tactics and cod4 is a fps shootem up. There is Arma2 coming next year.
For more info and the demo see Arma (http://www.armedassault.com/) homepage. The demo has 3 SP and 3 MP games. (the demo can run as a server too).

Yes you stay dead. Its pretty much a 100% copy of CS play.
Arma looks good. I'd be more than happy to give up some graphics for a game on that large an area..... sweet.
ArmA - hmm a game that doesn't seem to have moved on since OFP was released 6 years ago - an unforgivable clunky interface that has changed little in 6 years, graphics that where once ground breaking now look awfully dated, you need a ninja pc to play the thing on at decent res and graphic levels - and its about accessible to new players as swallowing glass.
Yes its a sim, but I think its galling that the makers of AA are pushing it as a new game to be honest, many of the features were promised aren't there ie deformable landscapes etc.
Yes COD4 is arcadey but least its more fun and accessible - saying that I'm still waiting to see a game that will have the longevity and teamwork of BF2 - COD4 doesn't rely on much teamwork in online games, ET:QW is dumbed down with little skill required to shoot your opposition and again little in way of cooperation, TF2 fun and as a replacement for CSS ok, but not for a serious tactical shooter. So I hope the new bf3 cuts the mustard.

Are we talking about the same game? :g:
If you minimize all settings it sure looks ugly as hell. But I can play it in my old crappy system (2.8GHz HT P4, Radeon 9700, 1gig mem) with like 20-30+fps and decent looks (maybe bit lower than cod2). That sure ain't ninja. Actually I bet Cod4 would be heck slower in that system, if it would even start. I've read bit of the performance issues etc in the forum and it seems in some cases it is because of making the post effect settings way too high (fps killer). It has also improved in performance with patches (the first demo was slowish, the newest 1.06 demo runs better). If you put the goodies on, it really doesn't look outdated (not possible for me until I get a new computer). Also as mentioned its job isn't really to be a screenshot generator, but a simulator.
I don't know about the interface being clunky or 6 years old. I can use it fine. Supposing you don't feel it clunky, why change something which ain't really broken? But if you have made the settings so high that it drops fps really low, it makes also e.g the map interface slow and bit unresponsive. I didn't have difficulties get into it. Maybe your 'accessibility problems' were because 'simulators' have normally more keys to memorize than arcade games.

Well, you can destroy trees, bushes and houses. But you cannot make 10 meter holes into ground. Ok it would be nice, but not necessary. It's not in many other games either.

Fun...well...that's personal opinion. I don't like so much death match rambo games were people jump and run all around like being in steroids (BF games, Cod2 at least) and where is as much team work as in subway at rush hour. Then the map is limited by some artificial boundary like a 'minefield' or buildings.
I find more fun in games which try to be close to reality. That's why I'm interested in Arma more than any cod. Like in racing games I play Live for Speed and not Need for Speed. I'm not Arma obsessed - if you can show me a game which does all that but better, I'm just happy.
Question Aquilifier;
Do you think everyone attacks your opinion or such?
In alot of games there's teamplay or so, a short example;
BF2/BF2142; Clans/Communities; TacticalGamer, BiG/RiP
CSS; Clans/Communities; -=[dMw]=-, TacticalGamer, BiG/RiP
There are clans/communities that actually prefer teamplay. You just have to give those a try, they make playing any game alot of more fun.
Quote from: DuVeL;213724Question Aquilifier;
Do you think everyone attacks your opinion or such?
eh? No no. You got me wrong. Everybody can think what they like, or love or hate any game they like. I just thought the previous post was bit harsh, especially about the graphics. It really doesn't look that bad at all (imho).
Maybe I'm bit bored and write more than I should.
About team play... I know there is team play in clans, but it's not quite the same is public servers (to my experience) in many games. To get good team work, I think you need to join a clan. Especially BF2 is much of team play, but the arcade feel is bit more I would like. I never liked the first BF so much, so maybe I have bit unfair idea about the later versions. About Cods...Cod4 certainly looks good and even it is arcade and can be fun as such (hey I even consider bying it!), I would like large maps which give much more room for team work. I don't think BFs, CS, Cod, etc is a bad game, but they all would just need bit more realism for my taste. I'm even ready to give up some in the gfx to get more realism.
I didn't mean to offend anybody. Honestly. Sorry if somebody got that idea... I promise to put more smilies next time :) ...or maybe I should stop posting altogether.
Nah, no need to stop posting but it's sometimes the way you respond to a post.
You don't have to be in a clan to get good teamwork. Sometimes finding the right server or such is a bit difficult but once in a while a server stands out in the crowd.
Hence; -=[dMw]=- and TacticalGamer. Allways tactical and teamwork, the way to go.
If you get the game, go check out the BiG-fellas. I'll be playing there when I get my copy.
