Title: Welcome to 2008
Post by: OldBloke on January 01, 2008, 02:59:22 PM
Well, ladies and gentlemen (and you Benny), it's been another highly successful year for Dead Men Walking and it shouldn't go by without giving thanks to those people whose hard work and dedication has kept this community going strong. Even with the pull of different games and, in some cases, different teams we have maintained the terrific sense of community that we've so carefully nurtured over the years. Everybody knows what dMw stands for and all of you should feel immensely proud for helping to maintain our standards of maturity, attitude, teamwork and fairplay. Our community may not be unique within the gaming world but I reckon it's the best and long may it be so. :yahoo:

Last year we changed hosts from Hi-Velocity to Brightstar which meant we had to physically move servers across London. I would like to thank Gandalf and TeaLeaf for all they did in making this move a successful one even though they came up against some difficult obstacles in the process. We also owe a huge debt of thanks to Gandalf for his work in securing a new hosting package for us that has proved to be just the ticket :thumb:

After three years at the helm Whitey stepped down as leader of the 'Folding' team and handed over to Delanvital and Duvel who continue to ensure that our gaming rigs (and any other pos that has a cpu) is put to good use. If you're not folding for dMw - why not?

We have thriving gaming sections that continue to introduce new people to our world of mature gaming. Doorman's 'Live for Speed' section has seen it's membership more than treble over the last year and narrowly missed winning the accolade for providing the 'Friendliest Server' in a poll on the official LFS forum. Well done Doors. You really are quite good :flirty:

I'm embarrassed to say that I am not at all up to speed in the workings of the WOW section so I will have to leave the year's 'accolades due' to TeaLeaf and Bastet.:byebye:

I thinks it's fair to say that TF2 didn't rock our boat as anticipated nor did the continuing Battlefield franchise in the shape of BF2142. But there was a huge success story that does need recognition ...

2007 saw the continued revival of CounterStrike within dMw to the point where I can honestly say it is now as good as it's ever been. And that took hard work. Many people helped in achieving this level and on behalf of the whole community I thank them all but someone deserves a special mention.
In 2006 CounterStrike was seen by many to be on it's last legs. CounterStrike was so 'yesterday'. It had been played to death by all and sundry and any interest in keeping it going was slowly ebbing out of the community. Enter Whitey. He took the bull by the horns and set about restoring its former glory within dMw. I reckon he's achieved that. :yahoo:
Today we see innovations such as 'no entry' signs, admin school, the dMw CS:S Ladder and yet another hugely successful Christmas Tournament. Congratulations on what you've achieved Whitey and many, many thanks for all the time and effort you've selflessly donated.:worship:

Another one of our tireless members we owe a huge debt of thanks to is Blueball. He's our very own 'Duracell Bunny'. He never stops working on behalf of the community whether it's configuring our servers, maintaining our forum or providing answers to forum posters. He's a top man and we're very lucky to have him on board.

So what next for dMw in 2008? CounterStrike shows no sign of slipping in popularity so more of the same there me thinks. LFS is under constant development and every change has, as far as Dead Men Racing is concerned, been positive so no imminent rush to try another sim there. I'm sure WOW will continue to meet the demands of its players. After all, hard earned cash needs to change hands so it has to. We will be reviving BF2 as interest has been shown in doing so. If you have it then get patched to 1.41 and watch this space. This year we will be purchasing a new server for use at the LANs. Our old 'BlackAdder LAN' is showing its age and needs to go out to stud where it will see out its last days folding WUs for dMw.:byebye:

There's no point in having a spinky new LAN server without LANs so we will, of course, be holding these again in 2008. The LANs are great fun and if you've not attended before then you really are missing out on a great weekend's enjoyment. Now then. Talking of the LAN ...

The community is run by volunteers who donate all of their time for free to ensure that we provide our members with the best gaming experience we can. However, we do have to pay for hosting, bandwidth and hardware. These costs are partly met from donations but are mostly met from the profits we generate from LAN attendees. So if you are unable to make it to the LAN then please consider making a small donation to the community fund. This will ensure that we can continue to grow and provide you with the services you currently enjoy. Thanks in advance.

Finally, on behalf of all the 'management', I wish you all the very best for 2008 and thank you for your support in the past and look forward to your continued support in the future.

You can still do that you know :winkiss:

As for 2008, I hope i'll be one of the attendies of the dMw lan's cuz well, i've allready been here for almost 3 years so it would be about time it did, right? :yahoo:

And i'm glad that the cs:s part of this clan is still triving (can't really say about the other parts, cuz i don't play those games), and bringing in new members, wich is great, since well there are alot of games out there that look better, are more flashy and maybe even more fun to play at first. But well, an online game cannot survive without proper servers and  good communities to support/play on it.

So again cheers for keeping up the good work and keeping the community alive and growing. And well, i guess i'll shoot you all out there in 2008 :norty:

:blush2: Thanks OB.

It's been a great team effort to turn CS around and I'd like to thank all of the CS Admins for their help.  Special thanks should go to BlueBall for all his work on the server side, to Sadako for hosting the fast downloads as well as all of the time spent on map testing and Admin school and to Blunt who spends more time as admin on the server than I do in my house .  Big thanks also  go to the whole dMw community who have made this such a great place to play :dmw:

Bring on 2008!

Yeah, thank you all, especially tireless Whitey, for a great year - really looking forward to 2008 in dMw :) The cliché said many times, but is so because it is true: dMw is a damn unique thing - and I am damn proud to be a part of it :D

Thanks for all the work that goes into the games and the forum. I kill hours a week checking and rechecking to avoid meaningful browsing. And lets hope it stays that way.
Counterstrike is booming right now, my hope for 2008 is for TF2 to get even 1/4 of that stregth for a couple of games a week. But theres a whole year to discuss that.
Thanks Admins.

If we didn't think you lot were worth it we wouldn't be making so much effort. We do the hard work because we are part of a great group of people - namely you the dMw community (irrespective of the type of game you play).

So thank you one and all for your support of dMw

As much as id like to take the credit here, honesty has me thank Gorion, and the other officers (even the gits that do nothing, like Bob :narnar:) and all the players from SOG and dMw that worked hard to intergrate the alien concept of wow into the community. It wasnt eazy but I think both SOG and the CS:S section (another hand for whitey :yahoo:) have been quite good at making ppl feel right at home and it is showing. Its quite nice to play several games with the same group of good guys and muppets.

Lets hope that 2008 will be even better :)

I too would like thank everybody for the hard work and sheer determination to make things work as they should. I have enjoyed my first year hear and plan to stay for as long as you will have me ..

I think as we finished on such a high , 2008 can only get a little better , but then im sure all of those involved behind the scenes and the players that waste their precious time on the servers for no better reason than just to be around decent people, will continue to strive to make this the only place to be ..:yahoo:

On the flip side my motherboard failed on me on New years eve.. so i am now out of action for about a month.. However ... this will give me time to start honning my skills so that i too can kill the likes of Kreg and DuVel..:boxing:

I will also dedicate my time in generating a script that stop BK from buying a  P90 when i am on the opposing team.:sideways:

As stated above it has been a team effort. Many of the ideas in the cs section (where I have been active) have bounced back and forth many times until a good solution have been found or the idea have been discarded. We have tried many ideas some more successful than others but it is evident that we must have done many things right considering how much and fast CS has grown. Almost every night there is a good TCS game going on Boomer. I hope that the CS ladder takes off and someone dares to challenge Squ0nks team for the first place.

Hopefully there wil be more news during 2008 in the CS section. There are certainly ideas but the question is how to implement them. Everyone keep up the good work and as Oldie said, if you enjoy this place please sponsor the community using the paypal link. In this case the size doesn't matter. :norty:

Happy holidays to you too Bastet

As you've probably noticed, I haven't really been much active the last months - the forum says my last visit was the 16th December :getmecoat: I'm just here now do to some catching up, but I'll do some posting in not a too distant future letting you know what has been going on, so you can all just leave the comments to than.

For now, I will only wish all of you the very best of the year to come. I am proud of being a part of dMw, and I hope and think it will continue to be as great as it has been the last year!

All the best :dmw:

I'm only just getting to know you guys but I'm beginning to enjoy not just the gaming but the community spirit and relationships - big up the lot of you!

As for 2008, I'm hoping that my CS:S will improve and I hope to take part in some more serious gaming.

Oh and on that subject I think you guys have a GREAT base for developing some good teams btw. A bit like England football, get the basics right (the tactical servers force ppl to play properly for the teams) and the top level (tournament players etc) will have a lot more players ready and playing well.

I'm also looking at buying a new gaming PC in a month or so and would be interested in new games to play such as TF2 and BF2.

Finally is the LAN thing an invite only?  Am I too new to be able to come?  Maybe the Plymouth posse could go together? :D

Laters guys

The LAN sign up is open to Charlie then Bravo and finally Alpha.  There's always space available, so If you want to come you'll be very welcome. :)

You'd be most welcome.

We like older people to come as it makes us 30-somethings feel a whole lot younger :)

Sigups for Charlie members start on the 11th Jan then a week later for Bravo and a few days after that for the Community.

There's always usually room so don't worry.

Ahhhhh thank God for OldBloke! :D Calling other people whippersnappers (or in my case I call them 'snipperwhappers') has usually been for me to say to other gamers - it's a refreshing change to have some who are a couple :eyebrow: of years older than me
