Title: Games, new challenges etc
Post by: Benny on January 02, 2008, 03:25:47 PM
So, it's time for my bi-monthly annual quarterly review of what I want and need.....so;

CoD4 - Superb, best game I've played in a long time single player. Too short, but hopefully there'll be some add ons, thoroughly enjoyed it. Well put together, good story, great game. Recommendations based on that would be good.

Stalker, I ran it a while ago, didn't like it, but it was on a poor system. I've now upgraded my graphics card (ignoring all advice, but more than happy - runs everything in high detail and cost me 130, so can't complain). Apologies to those I didn't PM back, but I digress). Is it worth me having a go, is it just as shite in full detail?

Crysis, played the demo, thought it was a bit crap. Looked nice, but I'm not into being 'bionic benny', I basically wanted Crysis without mutants, and I think it will become that if I get the whole game.

Installed NoLF2 and it's ok, but not great.

Pro Evo 8, always a winner, can't fault it, but it's not a long term thing.

HL2, didn't finish, got bored.
Ep1, got half way, got bored.
Ep2, didn't start, thought I'd get bored, but didn't want to ruin it.

Gal Civ 2, was ok, would have tried harder if I'd paid for it, but essentially turn based and got bored.

Portal.....bored about an hour in. Spotting a trend here?

Call of Juarez......see above.

That said, have got Tomb Raider (wii) and Drakes Adventure (?) (PS3) which I'm enjoying, Brain Training (wii) is suprisingly compulsive and I want to increase my score....1433g at the moment.

So, fly my winged monkeys and recommend some games. Single player only chosen as I invariably need to pause a game to sort out one child or another, and experience tells me that it tends to be fairly fatal to do that in CS...

What about the Bloodlines stuff or any of the other top rated Steam stuff?

Stalker was good but would have been better if you had a vehicle (even a mutant dog sled) to travel around in..

Really bored with Hellgate so don't bother..

Have you considered reading?

yeah, half way through McNabs new one, got the Pullman trio to read, Dawkins God Delusion on the burner (good good book, recommend that), Pratchetts new one also on the boil......

PC is 8-11, book is 11-11:59, 11:59 is the creep into bed piece...

Suggestion;
Oblivion - The elder scrolls.
Really good single player game. Might be worth for you to check out Benny. Lots of quests to do and I really enjoyed it.

Forgot Oblivion, tried it, got outside got killed by some thing that looked like a bad Thundercats model. Stole a horse, got beaten up.

Should mention I've got Zelda on the Wii, don't like it.

I know what you mean about getting bored with single player games, it's just not the same experience as multiplayer, plus you have to pay more attention to storylines, reading all the information on tapes, mission briefs etc. I find they are best when you have a quiet moment and can really focus and enjoy them fully. i need to do that with Stalker sometime..

it's typical FF type fodder. I just find it tedious and childish. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it just is full of big eyed kids and classic Nintendo presentation.

Your kids would probably like it, mine did.

I quite fancyed the bioshock and infernal games. Good shooters. Both had similar effects to COD4 for me, good story, good action, and cant stop playing :)

Bioshock, played the demo. Seemed like Doom 3 underwater. Dark and jumpy and somewhat annoying. Infernal? W'ats that then?

It's called.....get pished off with work and stop working all the hours that are available and figure I may as well play games for all the good it does me.

Kids sleep, Emmerdale, Corrie, Eastenders, Sold, Midsomer Murders, all ample opportunity for me to play whilst the missus is engrossed.

I think you should try Oblivion again its the best one player game I have played in ages! you could also try it with OOO mod which sorts out the leveling so when your a level 20 you don't still get your A$$ kicked by a rat!

Tried Stalker - Let me down
Bio Shock - to weird to be immersing

And I am with you with the orange box!

LOL why don't you play sims!

The Wii version of Sims is quite interesting, its not really like the PC version. I'll borrow it off my brother-in-law when hes done.

I Loved COD4 on my PS3, online play is good too :D

but i would have to recommend buying
Burnout Paradise City when it comes out (January 22 in UK) i got the demo which is goood :)
Or...
Mario strikers charged football for your wii, that entertains for quite a few hours
but it all depends on which type of game you like..

Anyone suggested the Witcher? Apparently it's quite good if game of the year awards are to be trusted. Not played it myself though.

Got awful reviews in PC Gamer....

Charged strikers, got it, boring single player, would be ok online (played once but got annoyed at the lag on the super shot thing)

Well for a non-inventing quick fun I played the Alpha Prime demo on Steam (which for some odd reasons manages to run on my laptop at all-low settings, which CS:S doesn't). Perhaps check it out?

Got Crysis recently, played it a little, seems pretty good so far. :D

So far i have played

Moh airborne: storyline was pretty poor aswell as ai and gameplay. 4 hours of fps but didn't like it

cod4: Multiplayer was awesome but would have preferred the ww2 line instead of modern combat. Singleplayer was much of the same as before.

soldier of fortune:payback - Pretty good game although bit like serious sam little storyline just run and shoot

bioshock: Awesome simply awesome. The big daddy's were brilliant i wish the story hadn't unfolded as it did but one of my favourite games of all time

stalker: lacked a motor vehicle and so to continue with the storyline there was alot of walking back and forth.

halo 2 for pc: Just completed this pretty poor conversion but some good moments graphics and ai sometimes poor

Crysis: Just started and seems pretty awesome.
