You can also try deleting all folders in the C:\Documents and Settings\login-name\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache folder

they will get rebuilt on first map load

Other thing to check is that your card monitor will run at 800x600@60Hz as BF2 tries to start at that initially and it is so well coded that if your setup wont run at that (even though it runs at higher resolutions) then it will crash out :sideways:

Patch 1.41 installed, F@H disabled, screen res checked and cache cleared.  Still won't start past the initial splash screen. :g:

From the Tweak guide (http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_7.html):

QuoteVideo.con

VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x960@75Hz

This setting controls your current resolution in Battlefield 2. The format is Width x Height@Refresh Rate. If you cannot start up BF2 and change the resolution from within the game, try altering it here to help you startup the game. In particular when you want to launch BF2 for the first time and the game just crashes back to desktop (See Troubleshooting Tips section), you can change the resolution from its default of 800x600@60Hz to one your monitor supports. Note however that certain resolutions are unsupported and entering them here will not work - see the Command Line section further below.

I've tried various resolutions and still no luck. Trying a full re-install now of BF2.

Was one of them 800x600@60Hz? IIRC that is the basic resolution and frame rate for the game.

Check these out:
http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=101709

and try no-sound.

Edit: Damn. Too late.

Quote from: Whitey;217700I've tried various resolutions and still no luck. Trying a full re-install now of BF2.

I had the problem a year ago and I can't recall what specifically fixed, however I do remember following steps like the following:

http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t22856.html

QuoteEureka!

So I called EA and they told me to go through this procedure for a full un-install. If you un-install via the software, a lot of background files are still there and the game will still hunt for the old video card, then crash when it can't find it.

Here's what they told me to do:
You can manually uninstall the game by removing the files and registry keys associated with it. Be sure to follow these steps exactly as they appear to prevent accidental file/program deletion on your system.

note: To manually uninstall the Battlefield 2: Euro Force and/or Battlefield 2: Armored Fury booster packs you must do a complete uninstall of Battlefield 2 from your system.

To delete the save files:

1. Open My Documents.
2. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.

To delete the game files (in the default location):

1. Open My Computer.
2. Open the C drive.
3. Open the Program Files folder.
4. Open the EA GAMES folder.
5. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
6. Close all open windows.
7. Right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

To edit the registry and remove Battlefield 2:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type regedit in the text field.
4. Click File and then choose Export.
5. Name the file Backup and make sure the Export Range is set to All.
6. Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
7. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
8. Click the plus sign next to Software.
9. Click the plus sign next to DICE.
10. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
11. Right-click on the Battlefield 2: Amored Fury folder (if applicable) and choose Delete.
12. Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
13. Right-click and choose Delete on any Battlefield 2 folders.
14. Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
15. Click the plus sign next to Windows.
16. Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
17. Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
18. Right-click on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B} andchoose Delete.
19. A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
20. Close the WindowsRegistry Editor.
21. Go to the following folder: C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (If you cannot find this folder you may have to go to Tools > Folder Settings and click the setting to “SHOW hidden folders.”)
22. Find the folders with the exact same values as the registry keys above and delete them.
23. Empty the recycle bin once more.

Battlefield 2 is now completely removed from your system.

Try cleaning out your Temporary directory. Do not delete the folder itself, open the folder, select all of the contents, and then delete them. Often you will get an error that some of these files can't be deleted. This is usually because they are currently in use, so first let's end any program that would be using these temporary files.

· Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys at the same time
· Click the "Processes" tab.
· Click on the gray bar in the middle column that says User Name to sort by user name.
· Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.
· Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or other user names.
· Click on END PROCESS
· Repeat these steps until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.

Note that some applications may take multiple times before closing. Don't worry that you are permanently changing your system configuration; these applications will return when you restart your system. Once this step has been completed, please proceed to the steps below.

· Double click on "My Computer"
· Double click on the C: drive
· Double click on the "Windows" folder.
· Double click on the "Temp" folder.
· Hold the "CTRL" key and tap the "A" key to select all.
· Tap the "Delete" key on your keyboard and accept the "Are you sure you want to delete these files" prompt.

You may install the game from here.

It's great to see BF2 getting a revival within the community again. Congrats to Armitage on his new appointment as Section Admin. :thumb:

Unfortunately I won't be around to join you on the server tonight. :bye2:
My continued absence is a result of my PC being mothballed up in the loft after my Study gave way to the Nursery.  It's waiting for me to pull my finger out in a fit of DIY and create a new home for it.

Have fun! I'll be there in spirit.

Yup, why did BF2 slow down in our little community.

I'll tell you why...  EA was releasing pack, after pack, after pack of additional stuff.

People got p*ssed off with the ever expanding (and costly) BF2 universe, those of us that bought the SF pack regretted it (none so more than myself who produced a fully working SF:AAS code two days after release) because it was too soon to expand an already developing game. Even so, the expansion was a great addition, but too soon. The grapple was an excellent tool to climb all those buildings.

Now that they have left BF2 to settle down and mature properly, its become the game that we always knew it was.

If you can find the "Special Forces" expansion pack for a few quid, then please buy it, the few games we played were excellent, but didn't have enough people to really take off.

Those of you who didn't join us tonight are complete oblongs!

:crying: tried my hardest to get on to the server but as i had patched and re-installed and just finished the download of the tampa map, the worse thing happened the RAID array went out of sync and i have lost everything...

Ah well it was a fresh build anyway as was using it for testing the previousl week, and I would have joined with my lappy but i thought with my luck i had better not risk losing more data......

Hopefully as im building a new RIS image this should be ready for meathook this friday and monday's next scrim on the BF2 server...

I was really looking forward to this as well, i had got my biccies and coffee and a fresh pack of smokes all on my desk, sat with my jeans a vest and my best keyboard and mouse out from storage as well (which i put on charge the night before)

The biggest downside of SF was as I saw it, the fact it was a stand alone game rather than just adding to the oiginal BF2. If it had just added a lot more content to the original game, more peopel would have bought it.

I'll install BF2 when the comp gets back.
Played SF quit a bit but it sometimes got really laggy on some servers.
This should be sorted a bit in a patch from what I've read.
I must say that the choppers in SF were a bit more tricky to fly but being a gunner with a good pilot was just a massacre.

I played for a while but struggled to get into it properly I like to play on heavily populated servers and I missed the commander controls (Pretty pointless being Spec-Ops) without it.

I guess the numbers will grow in time and all will be good. I will be back next Monday so lets keep this thing rolling.

I forgot how hard it is to distingush the uniforms in a fire fight makes it difficult to snipe when your waiting for a name to appear in red or blue LOL

All good fun though

I think nobody went commander because it was the first night we had played BF2 for ages and we all wanted to show how useless we were (well me anyway).

I quite enjoy being commander but it can be quite draining.

Bah, was well up for it but unfortunately I bought the missus (among other things) a computer game she's been drooling over for ages for Christmas, without thinking to check the back of the box. Turns out it will only run on my machine, not hers  so I periodically have to turn my box over to her so she can play it . Aah well, hope to see y'all next week.

No-one went commander because we disable it in AAS.

Because you are usually only fighting over a couple of the flags, it gets a bit boring with artie raining down on you all the time.

Aye, but the upside is that AAS makes it viable to play such large maps with a far smaller number of players and still have fun, instead of having to chase around following the 'Point X is being taken' markers to find out where everyone is :D
