Title: 3G Wireless Internet
Post by: DarkAngel on January 31, 2008, 11:09:35 AM
Hey i was wondering if anyone else used this?

http://www.3-contracts.co.uk/3-usb-modem.html

Its 3G's Solution to wireless internet at home, im currently using it due to the fact im still waiting for my ISP to install our service.

Im currently situated in Newmarket which seems to have a rather poor service max download ive ever had is 1Mbps, but im lucky if i get 1/4 of that.

Hopefully someone has had simular experiences with this product and can suggest a few possible ways to maximise the inflow.

Ive already enabled all the Security allowances for a quicker connection (CHAP) and also gone with the manufacturers software instead of 3Gs.

This have been an option in Sweden (or Scandinavia) for some time and seems to work ok. Max speed being offered in Sweden atm is 7.2 Mbit.

Same concept here, and also up to 7.2Mbit. 3 in Denmark says typical available bandwidth around here is 2-5,5Mbit. The usual stuff, better in cities, worse outside.

not really gaming quality I wouldn't have thought. It's only really good for web browsing and email. I can get upto 3.6meg on my vodafone and have seen consistant speeds of 1meg down here on some speed tests. Should get more in the city.

The real issue with these is data. I have 100MB a month for £7.50, but any more than that and they sting you for it! 100MB isn't a lot when you look at content rich sites nowadays.

In DK IIRC a little bit higher than usual, but no biggie.

Maybe this is a useful read for ppl residing in the uk?

I contacted 3 about this too. They said their highest package is only 7gb. Sometimes i have more traffic than that in a month :(. Maybe we will get these packages free with our current providers eventually.

There is also a 24 month contract so make sure you want to commit before you sign up.

After having multiple conversations with 3G about how the service i recieve is extremely poor, i have got completely nothing.

They refuse to give me a refund as its out of their 3 day policy (which must be a joke) they agree with me that im in a very poor signal area and therefore dont get great connection speeds. At the moment its around 3 times as fast as dialup.

After trying to speak to their other departments they wont even lower my banding on the network being that i at the time only had the unit for 4 days!
I find this company bloody useless and fogging people off with "go back to the store" unhelpful and just down right rude.

So if your thinking about buying one dont buy from the store, buy online as then you have a 2 week return policy.
