Title: The Lan - Details for a Noob
Post by: Zootoxin on February 26, 2008, 01:22:58 PM
Having never been to a LAN meeting of any kind I don't know the score...

Basically what do I need?

Do I take all my kit? ie PC Monitor wheel modem etc etc or do I just bring me and a **** load of cash?

Have a look in the previous LANthread;
http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=21429

For the rest;
Cash is allways good as you may want to bribe Pen (you'll have to give him money anyway for the LANfunding and so).

For the rest, your steeringwheel and such might be an idea yeah as there probably is going to be an LFS-setup again (I reckon Mr. Doorman is going this time again).

EDIT; As your new to the -=[dMw]=-LANs, be aware of any kind of threats...
Now be afraid, BE VERY afraid...

There's usually a carefully crafted thread from Ninj or Pen with a packing list.

Decent 4/6/10 way mains lead, plus any OS install/driver disks in case of a Sheepy moment.

And a FULL virus scan, with an up to date scanner is important, so's a fair bit of extra disk space for all the pr0n you'll leech.

A couple of things need tweaking, but the gist of it is here:

This thread is to provide you with a packing list so that you remember to bring everything you should bring to the LAN along with a guide as to how to ensure your steam is up to date and that you have the relevant patches / map packs etc.

IMPORTANT:
Do this ON THURSDAY NIGHT ABOUT 10.00 PM. IF YOU DO THIS FRIDAY MORNING YOU MIGHT PICK UP A STEAM UPDATE THAT NONE OF THE REST OF US OR THE LAN SERVER WILL HAVE. THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT TO THE LAN GAME!!!!

Thursday 10.00pm
1. Connect to the Internet
2. Start Steam

3. **CRUCIAL** If you DO have the 'do not save account details on this computer' checked then enter your password and UNCHECK THE BOX. If you don't you'll loose your password details from the login screen and will not be able to play CS at the LAN **CRUCIAL**

4. Log onto Steam
5. Click 'Exit' on the Steam menu and quit Steam
6. Disconnect from the Internet
7. Start Steam and when the dialog box appears click 'offline mode'
8. Make sure Steam starts and you can fire up CS
9. Exit Steam again
10. Try restarting Steam again.
11. Run a complete Anti-virus scan.
12. Go to bed
13. Wake up
14. Go to the LAN

In a nutshell just make sure you can connect to Steam without being asked for your password. If you are asked to type in your password you're not going to be able to play at the LAN

BattleField2
The same rules apply to BF2. If a patch arrives on Thursday night then download it and install it. We hope to have an internet connection at the LAN but you never know when it might fail, so be patched up to Thursday night when you arrive at the LAN.

THINGS TO BRING TO THE LAN

Hardware:
PC - Virus & Trojan Free!
Monitor & VGA/DVI cable
Keyboard with cable
Mouse with cable
Mouse Mats
Power cables for PC, monitor etc
Panel plug (so that you can plug all of your electrics into the one panel).
Extension cable (just in case you end up 10m away from the nearest plug.
Joystick/Steering wheel
Lots of spare HDD space
Headphones (no you cannot bring your speakers )

Software:
Driver software for any hardware that you bring (in case you need to reinstall).
OS software for those hard luck system crashes followed by format c:
Games software

Networking
Your PC must have a working NIC (network card)
Ethernet cable - preferrably as long as you can get (10m would be great)

Miscellaneous
Duct tape - to keep those trailing cables from being triped on.
Hardware spares (if you have any then bring them just in case somebody else needs to swap out a CPU or HDD etc).
There is a licensed bar 10 yards from the gaming room.
There is a high street with shops, cash points etc 20 yards from the gaming room.

For you new guys. Don't forget the lube.

Friday night benny will initiate you into the dMw LAN. It only hurts at first, a young lad like you might like it... grab your ankles and think of England (or similar home country)

Remember Penfold is senile and will ask you for the LAN funds at least a dozen times. Only pay him once. He's a nice man but not really with it any more. Likewise he will try to sell you a LAN polo-shirt. These are great - buy one. Sadly he will then immediately forget and try to sell you another one. The trick here is to put the t shirt on straight away. It doesn't always work but wearing the shirt will probably save you from repeated offers to sell you one.

This year I am bringing both my Lan polo-shirt and a hat with a big sign that Says "Yes I HAVE paid my bloody Subs!" so I should be sorted.

Offcourse? Why are you off course, a young wizard such as yourself should always know exactly where he wants to be! (if you have never played Discworld that won't make any sense... you young air freshener)

Er... we don't know either... there isn't really anything coming out that looks all that promising, the only good new game with multiplayer since last time is Crysis and I think I'm the only attending [BIG] member who has it!

As Paddy said the other day, looks like we're going old-skool on this one.
