Title: avi => mpeg

I'll put this here then

I have a problemo that someone may be able to help me with.

I have an avi file of about 690mb that I'm trying to convert to something that will play in a DVD player.

Nero 5.5 says it can convert it to a SVCD but creates a file too big for a standard CD-R. I've also been informed it's a procedure with a far from certain outcome.

Is there an easier way to convert avi files to mpeg, and then to chop up and/or combine the results so they fit neatly on one or more standard 700mb CD-R?

Sadako has been helpful with this already, but I'm feeling guilty PM him all the time so any other advice would be appreciated.

(And where's that new forum for serious on topic only posts when you need it ? Ah here it is :) )

http://www.doom9.org/ (http://www.doom9.org/) has loads of movie editing programs. Could very weel be something in there to do it. At the least there'll be info on svcd and vcd encoding ;)

perhaps nero has a muti-cd thing built in? or not?

Unfortunately, ...unless you have a seriously clever DVD player (or a properly modded x-box ;) ) that can play divx/mpeg4 then you need to use mpeg-2 and unfortunately mpeg-2 isnt a great codec for small filesizes. I would estimate anything from double to 4x or more the filesize when you convert from divx to mpeg2. Plus you will lose a little bit more quality in the process usually (although this is often hard to notice)
