dont know too much about mp4 players,

but my advice would be to save abit longer and get yourself a good smarthone and add the vlc player (or its alternative) that way you have an all in one device instead of multiple devices to lug about, i had a smart phone but ended up also lugging laptop and didnt see point in phone aswell so ditched it in the end, but for most people its a good option..

i would personally go back to one and have been hanging my nose over a couple of the new HP range, as i have a new bluetooth ODBC reader (car diags) and dont want to spend £2k on a Jag satnav and have a works laptop these days so my laptop is stuck on its dock most days..... so want to consilodate my mobile personal gadgets into one and still use my works laptop

just my thoughts and ramblings

I had a whole thing written up with pros and cons of each but somehow cleared everything I'd written so I'll summarise.
I'd go for a creative Zen. The Stone if you just want a really tiny low cost mp3 player and can wait for a decent video player to enter your budget. The 30GB one if you can stretch the budget a little for full video support, or the 4GB V+ one if you want video for around your budget (depending where you buy from).

There are offerings from iRiver which look nice but I've not tried them out. I would personally avoid anything that doesn't have a brand unless you've tried it personally as they ofter turn out to be lame. Same with Sony, as they make you use their software and convert all your songs in order to copy them.
Creative mp3 players have really good sounds quality and are a brand I trust, so I would reccomend them, but the model you go for will have to depend on your budget and how "big" both dimensionally and storage wise you want.

Thanks for the help.

I have been checking out some.

End the Creative Zen 4 GB looks a verry good one to me.

Now i only want to hold this one in my hand before i buy one.

Can you divide the music in deferend maps in these players btw.

And do they remember the place they stoped the last time?

Not able to help with choosing a mp3/4 player but if your needing headphones as well then the sennheiser PX100 (http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-headphone-type/ear-pad-type/sennheiser-px-100.php) are superb.

The creative zens are a great buy, I have a Creative Zen Vision:M and I swear by it. It doesn't mess about with all this digital rights management nonsense that causes so many problems on the iPod and iTunes. You just grab your music collection and shove it on the player and that's it.

However there are a couple of things I don't like. First the usb cable is not a normal one. Ithas a normal usb plug on one end but has a specific plug for connecting it to the Ctreative player. So you have to have it with you when ever you want to connect to a PC. Also it does not allow you to just drag and drop mp3 straight onto the unit, like a little hardrive. You have to use the provided Windows software to move music/vidoe etc from the PC to the player (luckily for me there is a great open source app for Linux that does this). My Creative does have the ability to section off a bit of it's 30gb hard drive for storing files, images etc but any mp3's put there cannot be played. You have to import them using the software as mentioned. These are small things and overall the Creative stuff is excellent and they are built like bricks so should last for ages.

As to how they are stored on the unit..... all the mp3s simply get dumped onto the player in the same place. There are no folders etc. However each track is tagged with all the information about the song i.e. title, artist, album, genre, year etc. When you look through them on the player they are presented either by artist or album or whatever you like. Sometimes these tags can be missing and so you get an albumn called 'unknown' full of all these 'lost' tracks. However there are loads of simple free mp3 tagging programs that you can use to tag up your mp3s any way you like.

Finally get a new set of head phones. the ones that come with most players are total rubbish. Steinhauser are a good make. I got a fantastci 'in ear' set for about £30. just make sure you don't walk under a bus when using them as you cannot hear anything except music, they're that good :D
