it's getting to the bios occasionally but not consistently. keeps spinning up, spinning down then spinning up again, nothing on the screen...

Yup, its definately the LAN breakdown curse and beer is the techincal solution.
More like a setup-breakdown issue - all new parts, and i have got it to the bios once or twice so it's almost working i hope...
Main symptom is everything spins up for maybe 5 sec, no post, then everything spins down only to spin back up again 5 sec later, still no post...

Try with one stick of RAM and that should get you into BIOS. You may need to set correct voltage for RAM, a lot of it needs more than the default 1.8V

Yes, that's what i've been reading about on forums today. Will try when i get to the hotel!
If someone could copy or backup their steam css and Tf2 files to an external drive so i can copy them across once windows is installed (here's hoping!) That would be excellent! Didn't get a chance to do it last night :-(
edit: sorted (phew!) - putting a single stick in slot 4 got it to the bios and upping the voltage to the ddr2 got it running with all 4Gb :D
