QuoteSources claim Microsoft's latest OS update will arrive on April 29th
Shortly after the news that Microsoft is to withdraw (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130710-c,xp/article.html) popular operating system Windows XP from sales in June, sources are claiming that the long-awaited service pack 3 update will be made available for the system later this month.
TechRadar (http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/windows-xp-sp3-dated-319357) reports that a leaked release schedule says that SP3 will be made available on April 29th, with Microsoft’s close partners getting access slightly earlier.
Who is going to get it straight away? :)
...would probably crash my version of vista if I put it on.
It will probably be full of bugs and security flaws making XP an unstable mess. Then we all go out and buy Vista. Microsoft are genius!
I'm sure it was someone on these forums who once said "don't install SP1 till SP2 is in development"
I've stuck by that as far as possible, so it will be a while before I'm confident in it.:sideways:

In that case, prepare to install SP2. :)
Isn't SP3 basically an amalgamation of all the updates and patches since SP2?
Apparently not. They claim to be adding extras as well, though they're cagey about exactly what said extras *are*.
afaik the extras are additional Windows Live stuff, increased security (increased from what?? ) guess windows anti spyware thingie and stuff..
I assume (and hope) this won't come through the auto-updater in windows?
It would be nice to get a good look see at how stable it's gonna be before I install.
It's been so long I can't remember how SP2 was launched.
I heard that IE7 isn't even included!!!!!!!! :D LooL Liberator would love that ;-) Perhaps they are gonna ship Firefox with SP3?? :narnar:

So far SP1 and SP2 has not been downloaded through the autoupdater.
I'd be wary of using the updater at all. It's a brave boy who lets Steve Balmer loose on their PC. Microsoft usually release security fixes etc on patch Tuesday so I run windows updater on a Wednesday and pick the stuff I want and dump the crap I don't.

Well... Its not like you always have a choise... I have de-activated the auto-updater on my Windows box, but i quite frequently get a "You-need-to-reboot-your-computer-becaus-we-mingled-with-it-due-to-a-SERIOUS-security-update" message with a 5mins countdown... Bloody annoying too! Caus the "Ill do it later" button works like a blimming snooze button! :ranting2:

You said it. Drives me nuts :sideways:
I think you need to turn of Security Centre completely as a running service, so you don't get the shield or the task bar notifications. Just remember to check of the useful stuff though :)
I believe you can turn that off, XP home requires a registry change

Now running service pack 3. I can't notice anything different. If you prefer ie6 and windows media player 10 like i do you will be pleased to note the sp3 pack does not force an install of ie7 or wm11.
You're either braver or stupid to plunge in to a service pack that early imho. I look forward to hearing about the bug fixes that need to be issued!

TL.
Ie7 is a pile of crap, if you are not running it don't go near it.
Firefox 4 teh win!!!!11
From the SP3 white paper.
What Is In Service Pack 3
Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases. For example, the service pack includes functionality previously released as updates, such as the Microsoft® Management Console (MMC) 3.0 and the Microsoft Core XML Services 6.0 (MSXML6).
Microsoft is not adding significant functionality from newer versions of Windows, such as Windows Vista, to Windows XP through XP SP3. For instance, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7, although Windows XP SP3 does include updates to both Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7, and it will update whichever version is installed on the computer. For more information about Internet Explorer 7, visit the Internet Explorer home page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=55245).
One notable exception is that, SP3 does include Network Access Protection (NAP) to help organizations that use Windows XP to take advantage of new features in the Windows Server® 2008 operating system
So if you have kept up to date with ms updates you don't really need to install SP3 unless you are on a network with server 2008 servers.

Or if you want the miniscule performance increase as detected by industrial strength benchmarking applications.
Having said that ... I've upgraded
and please search the the net to find out about all the AMD users that are stuck in an endless boot loop since installing it - they cant even get into safe mode. Nice one MS

Not only AMD users  One tip I picked is that if you're using IE7 uninstall it. THEN install SP3. After cutting my teeth on my machine, updating Arja's PC was very straightforward. An interesting few days.

Firm blames partners for ignoring instruction on loading Intel XP images onto AMD machines
Microsoft has blamed its OEM partners for problems relating to its recent SP3 release, suggesting that they ignored its advice to be careful not to install the wrong XP image onto AMD machines.
The problem, which firm emerged with the launch of SP2, is apparently caused when an OEM loads the wrong Sysprepped XP image onto machines with non-Intel-based chipsets, such as AMD-based machines.
"Microsoft is aware of a reboot issue experienced by some users who have attempted to install Windows XP SP3," said a Microsoft spokesman told the Channel Register (http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/05/13/xp_sp3_microsoft_blames_oems/)'s Kelly Fiveash. "While the root cause of this issue is complex, it results from OEMs improperly placing a Windows XP image created for an Intel-based computer onto machines with non-Intel chipsets.
"Microsoft issued guidance to OEMs advising them to only load Windows XP images onto like hardware in 2004."
AMD confirmed the cause of the problem to the site, echoing Microsoft.
Interesting read
Indeed, I saw that article too. However someone has noticed that the auto-install version of SP3 is about 200-250MB smaller than the manual download. This suggests that possibly the manual download installs *all* the drivers, not just the ones that match your sysprepped image, and might prevent this issue popping up.
Might...
Quote from: Carr0t;231515Might...
Its amazing how often the word "might" and "windows" go together
Theres also an issue that if you install windows with sp3 already inside i.e. from a cd with an sp3 version then this will mean than it will save around 2-3gb hard drive space compared to a patch install from what i've been reading
I was just wondering......
Has anyone been brave/stupid enough to install sp3 yet?
does it work or should it still be avoided?
I tried it on a machine at work, nothing major happened and it still runs.
I've installed it on a couple of PC's. There are some issues around DHCP/DNS that have caused problems with it at work but on home PC's It has been fine.
reinstalled xp today on my laptop put sp3 on it and no probs at all

LoooL, if this story is anything to go by, then MS could be in serious trouble!

I doubt it will happen because MS has too much power but it's a thought!
