Title: Linksys Wireless USB Dongle
Post by: GhostMjr on May 04, 2008, 03:53:25 PM
Hi chaps,

A couple of days ago i bought a linksys wireless dongle from Tesco and proceeded to install it on my pc.

The usual garbage inside the box spoke of how to install the software first so thats what i did.

Anyway, cut a long story short soon after the  installation i just wanted out of interest to see what task manager was doing and weirdly it didn't go to task manager when i pressed ctrl alt del but instead to a windows security screen a bit like the box you get at work when you log into/ out of windows.

I did a dig around and found i couldn't change user accounts and xp seemed to be locked down in many ways. If i was a basic computer user i suppose it would have been a trip to pc world.

So i was a bit worried at first i thought it was a hacker as stuff had changed but then i thought maybe its the linksys dongle. I googled it and lots of problem/ support topics came up. The problem was that the gtgina.dll was modifying windows.

In some cases uninstalling the software had resulted in loss of the ability to get into windows. Anyway i tried booting into windows normally no joy. Got into last known configuration system restore and i was back online and stable.

Reported the issue to linksys who i trusted as it was Cisco.

I was told i could install the drivers from the cd, which i will try and do in future as it much be an isolated case :eyebrow:. Product returned and refund given.

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that for a piece of software to be doing what it appears to have done TOTALLY SUCKS!

Perhaps try it again but definitely set a System Restore point beforehand.

Thats such a stupid thing for drivers to do. I'm not sure why the manufacturers would do that. Anyway, good thing system restore worked.
