Assuming they do this alot and each time you write on a map it's got to be disposed of:

Savings: Â£1000 on maps
Costs: Â£5,000,000 on hull repairs.

Next time they should use clear plastic overlays (like they do on school projectors)

Most of the charts for the merchant navy are of course paper. They are updated with new stick on bits that are simply stuck only te previous chart.
