ISTR there being a very good reason not to use MSN+ but can't remember what it was. :?

I suggest a bit of 'Googling' on the subject before you install it.

That would be the "Micro$oft is $hite" reason.

Or maybe the "Hi, I may look like a paperclip, but I'm sending everything I can find out about your system, software, MP3s, vids and warez back to Redmond." reason...

There were several security holes in MSN, mainly exploits and buffer overrun stuff. All are now patched but you have to wonder how many more are lurking there waiting to be found.

I'm not entirely sure why you would want to run MSN at all, but it's basically advert driven, so the adverts are more or less compulsory. There's a registry hack that can help with pop ups but I'm afriad I don't know what it is. Doh.

Doggers is not wrong about your personal details either. They're worth a lot to your average marketer, who'll pay big money for details on a potential consumer.

Microsoft is well known for playing fast and loose with information supplied to it. You'll find a clause burried away somewhere that says Microsoft reserve the right (and will actually do it) to "introduce you"  :?  to carefully selected partners (i.e. anyone who'll pay them enough).

If you run a rules based firewall such as Kerio (as oposed to Zone Alarm which is application based) you could try to block all the ad servers that Microsoft uses. You'll still get an advert box but it will be empty (or will display a 404 error. Howevere there's probably a whole load of servers so you'll be updating the firewall fire ages.

Alternatively try The Proxomitron, which is about the best web proxy/advert filter on the net (and free). GL

There is an app called trillian which is secure instant messaging, will take all your MSN/AIM/ICQ and wrap it inot one...and did I mention it was secure?

Unless anyone knows any glaring issues, get that.

Or use the mIRC (v6.03) based version of Msn messenger.    :D

And here I was thinking that this was the "Seriously Though" section.....yet all I see are rambles about MS and their demonic ways when the question was "How do I turn the adverts off in MSN".

I'm sure Slowhand was looking for a brief description of a direct answer or at least a friendly and helpful no.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.................

Well there's two MSN applications. MSN Messenger and MSN Browser.

The comments about firewall blocking or using a web proxy are related to the MSN Browser. Obviously the browser uses the same port to get the adverts as it does the web pages (port 80 usually) so you can't port block and stop them that way.

A Web Proxy can block known advert sites assuming it's set up correctly. Still if it doesn't have the IP for the offending advert in its database it will let it through. It's other method of blocking, advert size probably won't work as adware windows are variable in size (they shrink or grow depending on the screen size - web adverts are always a fixed size on the web page as that's how they are charged for). You may just have to learn to live with the adverts :-(

If it's MSN Messenger then that's easier. Use a rules based firewall and block MSN Messenger from accessing remote ports 80,81 or 8000. This will block the adverts and leave a simple empty box. :)
