We've got a headset thread going here (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=8194).

At one time I was looking for a mic only but damned if it could find anything that took my fancy. They all were so.......inexpensive! Couldn't be any good could they? :g:

Mics are not very high tech, so why should they cost a lot? My parents use mic in voip calls and the sound is good. It doesn't seem to catch the PC fan sounds etc, but the I can hear the speech all right. It is especially good, if multiple people want to speak at the same time.

Personally I don't have experience with mics, so cannot recommend any. I use headset which includes a mic.

If they are cheap and you have a good quality headset, it wouldn't be a big loss if the sound isn't good enough. In that case a mic would be actually the sensible thing to try first. If it doesn't work then try another mic or a gaming headset.

From what I've heard in various places, aside from the components used, the higher cost ones have been QA'd and verified to a certain tolerance.  You may find a great mic for cheap, however it has not been checked out to the fullest extent that the QA'd ones have been.  You pay a little more to avoid the 'YMMV' variable.

Imho, i agree with aquilifer - i had a cheap desk mic for years which worked fine. I even taped it to my headphones for a while which not only worked a charm but actually made me funny (well, at least to look at). I only swapped because my SB X-fi came with some headphones which lacked the fancy tape-it-on/tape-it-off option for the headphones (sheesh, primitive thing was molded into place in some fancy plastic look, which can move up and down. bah!)
